My daughter goes to town on her hand sometimes. She finally stopped scratching herself a few days ago, THANK GOD! Now, she sucks on her hands and sometimes you hear the slurps.

Is anyone going thru this too? Some people say, they are teething, but I felt my way around her mouth, and so far, nothing.

Quoting Keleigh:

My son has been "eating" his hands since about 3 months. He puts everything he can in his mouth. I felt a few bumps on his gums this week, but I feel like he does this to keep him from being bored or just to get the taste of certain things. If he doesn't like the taste of something he'll spit it right out and an "ewww, icky" face. But I agree, I feel all babies this age do that.

I agree! My daughter has done it since I can remember. Hands, feet... actually...pretty much EVERYTHING..lol she doesnt suck on them though, she licks and chews. However she isnt teething yet.

My son sucks on his hand ALL THE TIME! I think it is so CUTE! He grabs at his toys all the time and they go right for his mouth... I think it has to do with learning about different textures and seeing how they feel in his mouth. This is the best thing, Gotta love it

My little girl isn't teething yet (Dr. confirmed this), but ALL she does is suck on her hands. It's really funny, I hear the slurping noises from the backseat of the car. Nothing to worry about though.

My daughter is a pro at sucking her hand! She has been doing it almost since she was born. It is definitely her way of comforting herself. She used to do it more during the day but now she usually just sucks on her first 2 fingers as I am laying her down to sleep. There are too many other things she wants to put in her mouth while she is awake! But she NEVER would take a pacifier or a bottle! And I had so many people make comments about how she must be hungry because she was sucking her hand.

Constantly! Her hands, my hands, anything she can get in her mouth! Her dr. says this is how they learn about the world, and they can get everything in their mouths fast as lightning too! She has started sucking her thumb now, won't take the bink any more!

My son (4 months) does it too. Sometimes he even gags himself. But its a good sign that hes developing social skills. My 20 months old son has Down Syndrome so I've learned a lot about what babies will do at different ages and what it means. It could also mean hes teething.

yes, my son is doing the same. They are beginning to explore how everything feels and tastes in their mouths. Also, if they are beginning to teethe, it feels good to chew on things. Even if there is no teeth breaking through, your baby could be teething for a couple months before you see a tooth. A good way to tell is if they are drooling a lot, chewing on everything from toys to washcloths/bibs, fingers, etc.

My daughter loves to have her hands in her mouth. She is not teeething yet. Sometimes when she has her pacifier in her mouth she will spit it out so that she can put her hands in her mouth. I don't mind it at all. I think it is kinda cute.

My daughter sucks on her hand so hard that she occasionally gives herself hickeys. She refuses to take a pacifier which i think is a good thing. I don't think she'll be a thumb sucker, although she has zeroed in on her thumb a time or two. Dr. says she'll stop on her own.

Oh yes mine is everything in his mouth too!! He loves his hands, dummy, teethers, teddies, my nose, chin, fingers, basically anything that goes anywhere near his mouth!! I do think he's teething as I can feel little hard lumps where the teeth will be so in the meantime he is having to constantly wear a bib so I don't need to change his t-shirt 10 times a day.....
My daughter was exactly the same but she had teeth by now...

My little boy also loves his fingers, it's hilarious to hear him slurping away when I am trying to burp him on my shoulder. He's started trying to put my fingers in his mouth, so I got a little finger cover style tooth brush/massager and he goes nut on it.

My son does this constantly. He sucks and chews on them almost all day and has been doing it for two months. I think it comforts him and I am pretty sure this is how he puts himself back to sleep at night so I am all for that. He sleeps about 9-11 hours a night and if this helps I am all for it.

Joseph has always tried to get his hands/ fingers in his mouth. His hands were always so cold from it too. Now he does it while drooling so it is even more fun. I have felt around his mouth for signs of teething to, but haven't felt anything. He will suck on his hands, your hands anything he can. at the moment he is gnawing away on my arm. A lot of people have told me he is teething or getting ready to teeth. I have also noticed that he will play with the bottle a lot and push it to one side. He also will not nurse except right after he wakes up.

My girl will suck away on her hand all day but won't take a dummy! Everyone assumes that she's hungry because of it but I think it just soothes her. She did it from day one and a lot of kids do it in the womb. I know a bub that came out with a little blister from where she'd been sucking already. I don't think it hurts them at all.

i tried the teethers too. she's not really interested in it yet. the one filled with water that u put in the refrigerater gets some attention but it's rare. she will suck on my hand and even my chin. it's a game she seems to like to play. it makes her giggle. it's the funniest thing i've even seen (or felt) and both my daughters did it. sometimes she sucks do hard i joke i'm going to get a baby hicky on my chin! (little vampire) lol

My baby is doing this constantly! I also couldn't help but notice the constant drool that is going with this. I like you, felt my way around her mouth and couldn't feel anything. However, I did notice that she wasn't sucking on my hand either. She was biting down on it. So, I bought a teething ring. Just in case.

I don't know.. between the wet diapers and bibs, she should be dehydrated, right? lol! as a joke one day my husband put the bibs in an empty kleenex box. funniest thing i think i ever saw b/c they were there for a while nested among the arsonal of other things i have in the basket on my table (i learned from my first daughter that running across my house every time there is a dirty diaper, etc. was nuts. so i have a basket with 'supplies' in the living room where we spend most of our time) i still laugh to this day.

No problem, Rae. both my girls had so much hair when they were born it was amazing. my oldest daughter had the craziest hair anyone in my family had seen. it stuck up from birth and didn't lay down for nothing! even when it was long, i just curled over. it made for some of the best pics! Both my girls were big droolers. i invested in a couple of good bibs with the plastic backs on them when the teeth started to come. i was going through so many regular bibs, it wasn't funny. i just keep them in a tupper on my living room table. like a bib dispenser! and i bought a couple of tie-on mattress protectors for the crib. they're usually used for spitting up but when she's in there and awake, she's droolin' away! (i like to give her crib time when i'm cleaning her room) it amazes me how much liquid can come from such a small body!

Hi Rae! My daughter is four months old and does the same thing (right down to the scratching. she has not taken to scratching me! lol) I was also told that it could be do to early stages of teething. her gums on the bottom are getting lighter so i'm sure teeth will follow. my other daughter did the same thing. i was also told she sucks her hand simply b/c she can. she is particularly fond of her pointer finger during feeding. it's cute to watch. and she doesn't seem to mind it. my pediatrician said that it could still be up to a month or more before the first tooth comes out but the drooling and fist sucking could increase. i'm getting the bibs ready just in case! ( by the way, what a cutie u have!!!!)

my daughter id doing the same thing. Sometimes she's like an animal when she really wants something in her mouth. Avg age for the first tooth is 6mo. But their teeth can be forming under the gum's so the gum's might be hurting. I have already given her some teething tablets. Sometimes it helps for a little

My boy happily munches on his hands pretty much all day! I think all babies do it at this age because they are figuring out how to work their hands and putting them in their mouths is the easiest thing to do. He gags on them, but it's all a part of the learning process so I just kinda let him go, I just have to cut his nails every other day...

My son spends most his day with his hand in his mouth!! He will now put himself to sleep by sucking his hand, it's hilarious because we can hear him slurping on it through the monitor. Ha-ha! I also heard it can sometimes be associated with teething, but my son has no teeth coming in. I think it's mostly just self dicovery, alot of mom's say that once they discover their feet they can't keep those out of their mouths either! Haha

My son sucks his hand and fingers like crazy. I constantly have to pull his hand out of his mouth because he will start gagging himself, silly boy. I don't think my son is teething so much, as just exploring the new sense of his mouth. He tries to put his blanket, toys, everything in his mouth. It seems like it's kind of like the sense of touch, where he loves different textures. He loves seeing how different things feel in his mouth. Just another thing for me to constantly keep an eye on.
