Ok so my baby girl is seriously underweight and I'm preg again so my milk supply has depleted. She screams and cries and flat out refuses to take a bottle of formula and won't eat solids. I'm feeling at a total loss as to what to do and plunket has essentially said we have to be firm with her, but thr reality is we can't force her to swallow and I don't want to traumatise her when it comes to feeding time. I'm desperate for a solution as its heartbreaking to see my little girl suffering and I obviously don't want her to end up in hospital....PLEASE HELP!!!!

So to all you mammas who were having the same problem as me I found a solution that may work for you too. I started by giving her formula through an eyedropper just to get her used to the taste, it took a few goes but with the help of her Granma (who isn't as emotionally attached) she started to take it. Day 2 (still with Granmas help) onto the bottle, she let her play with the bottle for a bit and after a few minutes she just took it....after me trying sooooo many times for days on end! All the while I was withholding boobie, essentially weening her. At doctors advice I put vegemite on my nipple to turn bub off nursing, funnily enough she seemed to like it!!! She now has chubbed up nicely and I can't make a bottle fast enough! Good luck, I hope this helps....I know how horrible it is to see your wee one going hungry.

Do you let others feed her the bottle? i found my daughter acts up for me when giving her bottle as she is breastfed. Maybe get fam to step in and help until she takes bottle n solids. It must be stessful for you, but doctors do insist a baby will not starve itself. Good luck.

have you tried the playtex nursers bottles? they are really good for babies who just finished breast feeding and are being switched to the bottle, and maybe try enfamil A+

Hi ladies, you could try using TommeeTippee bottles if you're not using those types. They're brilliany and the nipple teets are made to feel and act like a human nipple. They also have an anti colic flow valve in them, so won't make your baby extra gassy. We've been using these as well during breast feeding so hubby could feed Aaron when I pump, and for in the first week when I had to top up while my milk came in. I was breast feeding, and bottle with my milk and he had no problems going from one to the other because of how the nipple is made.

Hope that helps, and I hope your lil one is ok Stef.

GL all.

I am exactly in the same spot! My 6 mo. old refuses a bottle and nurses every 2 hours still (just for 5 minutes). I am exhausted and just end up taking her everywhere. She will scream when we try to give her a bottle. My ped said we just have to be tough w/ her too, and she wont starve. I started givng her the bottle to play with at the high chair and I know you can start to let them get used to a sippy cup which i will go buy and maybe she will bypass the bottle all together!

I dont really have experience with this I have good eaters, My 6month just started solids a few weeks ago and was picky on what he would eat, I just kept trying every few days giving him the stuff he didnt like and now eventually he eats most of it. I wasnt in the situation where he wasnt eating anything but my advice would be to just keep trying eventually she will get hungry enough that she will take the bottle (hopfully)
