My 5 month old has recently discovered screaming. It starts out mildly and delighted but she ends up working herself up! I know its mostly her just discovering her voice and using it, but it can get really full on. Should I just hope she grows out of it or does someone out there have some tips to stop her getting so worked up?

Hmmmm, lots of screaming babies out there. I'm starting to think its a normal part of their development...Pepper has calmed down a bit over the last couple of weeks or so, I've just been giving her a firm 'no' when she starts up, unfortunately she thinks this is funny, little creature!! She has lots of new noises that seem to occupy her time more at the moment...mini darth vader???LOL. Hoping she doesn't go back to load constant screaming! Good luck all you mammas who have wee ones with mammoth lungs!

I've been wondering about this screaming thing as well. My sister's baby is exactly one year and one day older than mine. He began screaming around this same time last year, and he still screams. My sister was babysitting my daughter everyday from the time she was 5 weeks old til about a month ago. My daughter started screaming around a month ago, and it's progressively getting louder (shriller too) and for longer periods of time. At first I thought she had picked it up from her cousin, but she hasn't been around him as much in the past month. I hope that she will quit soon because it's difficult to be in public with a screaming baby, whether it's an upset scream or happy scream or just to be screaming scream. I really don't want her to still be screaming when she is 18 months old like her cousin is. I'm thinking of asking the dr. for advice or suggestions at her 6 month check-up in a few weeks.

I am wondering the same thing Stef.

My son has become very familiar with using his voice (screaming) to get my attention and it can become very loud at times, is it encouraging him by responding to it? What is the best way to respond to it?

Yes, my daughter started screaming at about 4 months. We even took her on a plane right after it started and had to keep shoving things in her mouth to get her to be quiet -- a finger, a pacifier, blanket...she eventually stopped but has now resorted to grunting. I don't know how she can grunt so much without her throat hurting!! My doc says it's just normal as they discover new sounds and what gets them some attention. I'm sure your little one will outgrow it. In the meantime, take some video and get a chuckle out of it! :)

My four month old LOVES screaming. She screams when she plays and laughs about it but now instead of crying she screams as well.
