Swaddling

Do you swaddle your baby?

I wish we didn't have to, but he flails and writhes about so much that it's almost painful to watch. I try to only swaddle when he's going down for the night, but sometimes I'll do it for a nap if he is really tired and going crazy.

I'm wondering when we will be able to wean him off the swaddling. Right now he still startles himself awake as he is falling asleep or in light sleep and will then start kicking and punching, clawing at his face and pulling his hair. I don't really see another solution besides wrapping him up tight.

My son is 3 months old and i still swaddle him.At first he hated being wrapped up so i would just leave him and he was fine, then when he hit about 2 months he was very restless and he would wake himself up so then i started and ive been doing it since than.

My son is 3 months old and I still swaddle him for bedtime. I put him down on his tummy (I know, I know...) during daytime naps but I'm not comfortable with that at night so we swaddle. If he's on his back and not swaddled, his arms flail and he startles awake. I've never heard of swaddling interfering with growth or development (not saying it's not true, just never heard of it before.) and when he's truly ready to be awake he always wriggles out no matter how tight he's wrapped, so I figure he's fine...and we both appreciate a good night's sleep!

I've never swaddled my son, not for any particular reason either. He uses the sleep bags which are great!!!

I swaddle both my girls for naps and at night. It makes a huge difference! They sleep longer and calm down easier. It is recommended in "happiest baby on the block"

We will do it probably until around 4 months and then I will leave 1 arm out and then 2 and see how it goes. It is best for them in my opinion but every baby and mom is different of course and you do what works for you.

I still swaddle my 9 wk old, as I find he sleeps better at night. Sometimes in the day too, but often with his arms out. It helps prevent them from startling, and is meant to also remind them of the womb... In my book (kid-wrangling by kaz cooke), she says that usually around 4 months u can stop cos they wriggle too much...

Quoting Ali:

You should let him get used to not being swaddled anymore. I read that frogsuits and swaddling can interfere with your baby's growth. I stopped swaddling my son when he started fighting the swaddle. hat was around his 3rd week. Why not try to put him in between two baby bolsters so he would still feel a little constricted

I'd be interested to know where you heard that swaddling can interfere with babies growth, given that we have been swaddling babies for hundreds of years.

I have just started to ween my girl off swaddling for her day naps. Started with having one arm out and seeing how that goes. She has got pretty good arm control now and doesn't seem to flail much. Next we will have both arms out (probably in about a week). But I do completely swaddle her at night.

I still swaddle my daughter most of the time. I wasn't swaddling her, and found that she would thrash around and wake herself up. So I started swaddling her again. I just finished reading the baby whisperer and she suggests that you swaddle until they are at least 4 mths old.

Hey Carissa -

I swaddle baby for most naps - helps her sleep longer - but we use the sleep sacks since she cannot stand to have her legs swaddled in. Sometimes during the day I swaddle only her arms in  and let her move her legs - she likes that. I was told last week that after about 14 weeks you should start to wean from swaddling as it can effect hip development - so then you can still swaddle his arms as long as his legs and hips are mobile.

Later!

My daughter is two months old. I stopped swaddling about three weeks ago I could never get her to stay swaddled. However, she does not sleep very well in her crib. She ends up sleeping in her car seat.
