Toddlers and long car rides...how to deal

Were getting ready to leave for the beach in 3 weeks and I'm super excited being this is my kids 1st time to the beach. But I'm also a tad bit concerned how they'll react to the long car ride down. Were going to Myrtle beach in SC. My daughter just turned 3 and my son is 18 months. Does anyone have any tips they could share with me so we can avoid having a crazy drive. I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks :0)

I concur about traveling at night. If you can't do that, just be ready to spend a lot of energy entertaining. I keep a bag full of toys, and when my LO starts grumping, I pull out a new one. Each toy entertains for a little while, and then he grumps and it's time for a new toy. Yay!

DVD player works the best! We travel ALL THE TIME!! And the only thing that is a garauntee is the movies!! My son's favorite show is the Backyardigans (also 18 months)!

well my son just made it to sudbury which is like a 6 hour drive and he did very well and hes only 18 months... all we did was keep him entertained wwatching movies on his dvd player and he took his naps and it wasnt bad...

Drive at night! We leave at bedtime and they sleep the whole way! That's the only way we travel, saves a lot of headache and upset.

Hey i am not sure if it would work for you and your family..especially having an older one but i have done many 5 hr trips with my now 17mth old and one 7.5 hr trip!! We generally travel at night as this is when my partner likes to drive and our daughter basically just sleeps. If i am travelling on my own i much prefer to travel (very) early in the morning. I have found it doesnt affect her sleep as much as she gets to settle in and wind down before i am making her go to bed. I just did a 5hr trip last week and left at 5 30..i took a pop top with milk in it in case she woke..as well as a tonne of snacks and such. I also have a portable DVD plyer in the car and it has been a god sent!! she woke after about an hr and a half..drank the milk...slept till about 1.5 hrs before we arrived..we stoppped and had breakie and let her have a run around then kept going.She actually travelled quite well..A 3 yr old may be different to though LOL GOOD LUCK!!! it is worth it!!
