My son just turned 17 months and he talks quite a bit. I would say he says about 100 words and uses about half of that regularly. My other two did not talk that well so young, it is totally typical for a 16 month old to only have a few words. I think Logan talks so well because he has a four year old sister that talks to him constantly...even in her sleep! Just make sure you are talking to your child in "real language" and repeating everything multiple times. Work on a few of the easier and most usable words first and then once he masters those move on to a few more.

Mycah doesn't say many single words other than Mom, Dad, Katie (dog), Hi, and No.... but he says other things like "I love you" "get up" "don't do that" "get away" "good job" .... everyone finds this odd that he'll say phrases (although not all the time) and he seems to know when to say them (At the right time) I've given up trying to understand it... when he's ready to say ball he will i guess

My daughter is 17 months and she is saying around 40 words.
Boys generally talk later than girls. I wouldn't be too worried about it at this point. Just keep talking about everything they are doing. They'll catch on soon enough and then you won't get them to be quiet!!!!

My son just turned 17 months and he doesnt say alot of real words but he tries...he just recently started to mimick the words we say or the words we ask him to say. I think by the time he was a year the dr wanted him to know 4 words and by the time hes 18 months we is supposed to know 6 words..so hes on track. He babbles alot and 'talks' alot in his own language...lol but words he says for sure....are "Mom, Dad, cat, dog, no, love you, uh oh" there maybe a few more but cant think of them, but hes BARELY just starting to learn more and mimick what we say....ie; I will tell him Sit and he will finish my sentence with "down".....
In thier own time they will talk...my friends son didnt start talking much till recently and hes 2.5 yrs old.

My daughter is 16 months and she talks quite a bit.... She says mommy, daddy, cat, hat, juice, poo poo, pee pee, ball, bad, eyes, nose, teeth, cheese, pa pa, auntie, cup, up, happy, too, choo choo, bye bye, hi, high 5, uh oh, and many more..... and right now I'm trying to teach how to say how old she is, but she argues with me and holds up 1 finger but she says she's 2 and when I'm correcting her she gets mad and yells "I'm 2!!!" lol.....She also knows a bunch of animal sounds and when she's sees Santa she says HO HO HO.... but all children are different.... I work at a Child Watch for the YMCA and their are so many kids her age that still aren't even walking let alone talking..... Your son will talk when he's ready. I wouldn't worry about it too much..... Just enjoy the love, the smiles, the hugs, and the kisses :)

my 16 month old isnt talking either. he says mama and papa but he wont say anything else. he understands almost everything that is said to him in complete sentences but he refuses to talk. his pediatrician said that we shouldnt be worried because he clearly understands words he just doesnt seem to want to say them yet.

My 16 month old son is able to point and identify many objects, but he is not able to actually say the words yet.. He says single words like ball, dada, pawpaw, eyes, hot, etc.. but he doesn't even say mama yet!! My pediatrician said not to worry, he is developing normally.. No need to worry at this age.. Just enjoy all the smiles!!

My son says "up" and that's pretty much it. He will say "mamamama" "dadadada" "daddooo" and other babbles, and he tries to imitate us when we talk, but nothing that makes sense or even calling things (or us) by name.
Makes me extra glad we're doing sign language with him - he can sign over 40 words and that's very helpful.

it obviously depends on the baby. my little guy is going on 17 months and i worry about the same thing. he says very few words like mama, kitty, uhoh but thats about it. he has known these for a while and doesnt seem in a hurry to learn any more. have you talked to your pediatrician about it?

Hi, my DD is 16 months and she is speaking very clearly, nearly too clearly for a baby of her age. My other DD and DS did not speak as clearly as her but I believe that because she is constantly surrounded by kids including my 9 nieces and nephews and the 2 kids I childmind that she is at a great advantage. I have a friend with a son who is 17mth old and has hardly any words. He is an only child and his cousins are all very young too.

Hi, My daughter is 16 months and she says a few words here and there like mama, dada, food, nose but is not completing any sentences at this point. I don't think you should be worried about him my nephew is 2 now and he just started speaking more fluently.

my son is 16 months old, and has been talking since he was 7 months with mama and dada, i stay at home with him so i get to work with him all the time, his new thing is eyes and nose i just keep with the same things over and over again, adventually he picked it up then we move on to something else. He has now learned to copy everything i say. try sticking with one book and picking out everything in there saying what they are, thats how we started hope it helps, good luck.

Hi Kaylee - my son is also 16 months and not talking either. He oohs and ahhs a lot, but (other than the occasional "mama" - typically directed at our cat) definitely not using words. I think I sometimes confuse average with normal. While the "average" 16 months old may be talking, it is totally "normal" for a 16 month old boy to not be. Thanks for your post!!

my son is 17 months. at his 16month appointment i asked the doctor if he should be talking more bc my friend has a daughter that is about 19 months and has been talking pretty good for a few months...she said that girls usually learn faster. and as long as he is saying about words then he should be fine....and in the past month he has been starting to say a few more words or at least try to sound out the word..... so at 16 months your son should be able to say a few words. like mama, dada, bye, dog, ball. even if he isnt saying the whole word, but he is trying then it should be fine.
