Baby scratches til he bleeds...

I hope no one flags this as inappropriate, but my husband and I have been handling this for the past month and aren't sure exactly what to do (seeing the pediatrician Tuesday). Our almost 6 month old son grabs, pulls, and scratches on his genitals so hard that he's made himself bleed. We're now no longer letting him handle himself, and he gets so angry at our efforts to keep his hands away. I now babies need to learn about their own bodies, but we're afraid he's really going to hurt himself. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice? (Yes, we trim his nails daily.)

I'd also say ask the doctor to look down there for signs of discomfort. He could have thrush or something making him itchy which isnt visible unless you know what you're looking for. Other than keeping his hands away when you change him and keeping his nails short I dont think you can do much else without seeing a doc.

sounds like something might be causing him discomfort down there, otherwise I don't think he would be paying the area much attention. a trip to the doc is probably a good idea!
