hi - my daughter is 21/2 years old - we are in the process of toilet training but for about a couple of months now she seems to always have her hands down her pants - we tell her not to do that etc but she keeps doing it. i've asked a couple of mums and its quite common - do i ignore it or could it be an indication that something is wrong. like an infection - she doesn't complain and she talks really well so i dont think this is the reason

I wouldn't be too concerned. Most children go through this. I bet its probably part of them learning. Also, if she is potty training does she seem to do it more when she is having that uh oh feeling? I know my son pays more attention down there when he really has to go which has actually helped with the potty training. I'm not concerned because I know he will grow out of it.

I agree with Lindzy. Its normal and dont make a big deal about it but teach her its not polite to do it around other people

its normal for a child this age, we've always just ignored it and that worked for my daughters :) of course if you're in public you will need to correct her, I would just say *this is not the time or place for that* and move on to something else distracting.

I'm having a similar issue with my seven year old, up till now she's not had any indication but I just recieved a call from her teacher that she has been "caught" with her hand down her pants. The teacher said she's seen several kids do it over the years but just wanted to bring it to my attention. I haven't noticed it at home (or at least around me). I plan on trying to talk to her and also making sure its not a soap/irratation issue, any advice how to broach the subject cause I don't want to put her on the "OMG I'm in trouble"

She is probably just curious. Try to explain to her that while its ok to do this in private (in the tub or in her bed), Its not ok to do this in public. She is probably just realizing where her pee is coming from. My 2 1/2 year old knows that "pee comes from her "gina", and poop comes from her but.. and both belong in the potty! However, if she seems to be itching it and the area is red.. she could have an infection..
