How much and how often?

I was wondering what moms did with solid portions, how many times a day(schedules) and the amount (1 tb, 2tb, 2 oz?) Do you do cereal, veggies and fruits all in the same day, as well as how many portions of breastfeeding/formula?

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

Here's our schedule: morning 4 Tbs fruit w/ 3 Tbs dry oatmeal, lunch 2 Tbs dry cereal & 3-4 Tbs veggie, snack, 2 Tbs dry cereal & 2-4 Tbs veggie, dinner 3 Tbs dry cereal & 2 Tbs veggie

In terms of fluids, he maybe nurses 4x during the day for about 5 mins. He then nurses about 3 times a night. We're trying to get him to nurse and drink more during the day, but he's too active to sit through it all.

We feed cereal (oatmeal or rice) in the morning and evening 1-2 tbls depending on how hungry Amelia is. We also have a fruit or veggie mid-day, about 1 tbls. We have had pears, apples, bananas and carrots, trying a new one every 5-7 days. Breastfeeding throughout the day, every few hours as needed.

Quoting Sandra:

I posted this question because Celeste does not seem to stop on her own. She gets distracted easily in her high chair, but will open her mouth when food is offered. She has eaten at times a whole banana, or a whole pear! Up until now i was giving her:
7AM Breastfeeding(although since i started to work i give her a 6-oz breastmilk bottle)
11AM 2oz breastmilk mixed with 3-4tb oatmeal cereal and 4 oz breastmilk
3PM 6oz breastmilk
5PM Veggies (varies, might eat as much as half a cup or more if given)
7:30pm breastfeeding

I want to switch it though and not give her milk right after cereal. She is so chubby, and like a mentioned I never know when she has enough since she always opens her mouth.
Thanks for all your answers!

Penelope did not seem to stop on her own at first too. She eats 6 bottles a day of 6 ounces each, along with her solids. She has a fast metabolism and my doctor agrees with me. Once I started to feed her a little more she finally gave signs she was doen eating. I also have been throwing in some sign language at meal time and this makes eating take a little longer. I know if I eat quickly that I can overeat, so why would my baby be any different.  So I am trying to make meal time take a little longer, so she can know if she is still hungry. Maybe your baby is going through a growth spurt or has a high metabolism and needs a little more food than other babies. I hope this helps!

I actually had a ped appointment yesterday, and I asked that question. (I'm a first time mom) She said Will (my son 6mos 1 week) should be eating atleast 1 veggie and 1 fruit a day.  So in the morning we will eat some rice cereal with a little applesauce or bannana then a bottle between meals then maybe some carrots or sweet potaotes for lunch.  I try and feed him dinner the same time we eat, he seems to enjoy that maybe a little veg and fruit (generally whats leftover from lunch and breakfast) then later on before he goes to bed a little rice cereal plain.  The ped said he can go to stage 2 now which I believe is 3.5 oz portions instead of the 2.5 oz portions in stage 1.  He might have 2 bottles that are 6.5-7 oz then if he is really fussy before bed a nice 4 oz bottle of warm formula usually puts him right out.  Hope this helps.

matteo loves eating too! he just never seems to be full and i'm sure would carry on eating if i carried on feeding him. he eats 3 meals a day. the clinic recommended he only have cereal once a day. so i do cereal at one meal. veggies and protein for lunch and fruit with yoghurt the 3rd meal. they also advised he started protein at 6 months eg chicken, fish, yoghurt, cheese and egg yolk. i hard boil an egg and then mash the yolk up into his veggies which is quite quick and easy to do.

I make my son's veggies and freeze them into ice cube trays. I think one cube has 1-2 tbsp in it, and I usually feed my son 1 of those at a mealtime, or else 1/3 jar of fruit, and mix it with 1-2 tbsp of cereal. That being said, he seems to want more lately, so i just feed him more if he finishes his meal quickly and seems like he wants more.

7AM Breastfeed

9AM 1tbsp Cereal + 1/3 jar fruit

10:30 Breastfeed (sometimes he nurses to sleep for a 2 hour nap)

1 PM Veggies (2 cubes)

4 PM Breastfeed

6 PM 1-2 tbsp cereal with either 1 cube veg or 1/3 jar of fruit. Sometimes he gets an arrowroot cookie afterwards. Messy, but he likes it :)

7:30 or 8 PM Breastmilk in bottle (about 3 oz if I can get him to take it all)

He goes to bed around 8, and I stay up and pump at 11 PM and use the milk for his next evening's bottle and to mix into cereal the next day.

I usually breast feed at 7:30 8am depending on which time he wakes up, then around 9-9:30 I give him 2 tbsp of oatmeal or barley cereal (he's not too fond of rice any more now that he tasted those two) then at lunch 12:30-1 I feed him either peas or cereal, and then dinner 6-6:30 he gets either peas or cereal depending on which one he had at lunch. All that with breastfeeding in between, I got a hungry growing boy.. 22lbs 28inches LOL! Tomorrow we start carrots woohoo! Maybe he will enjoy those better LOL!

My daughter is 6 1/2 months old, and she just started eating stage 2 foods.  I feed her one 8 oz bottle of formula 3 times a day, and with each meal I give her 1/2 jar of food.  I usually give her fruit in the morning and veggies at dinner.  At lunch I alternate between fruit or veg.  I also mix in a small amount of rice cereal with her food once or twice a day.  I've read that at around 8-9 months is when the meals go to 3 times a day, but my baby refused to take a 4th bottle of formula, and is very content with good weight gain with the amounts I feed her.  Hope this helps.  This was something I wondered myself, but I think every baby is a little different.

Hi Sandra:

We've been doing solids regularly for about a month now and I find that Eric's portions are constantly increasing every day. He still has a meal now and then where he doesn't seem to want to eat at all but then usually eats a lot at his next meal. This is our usual, though (the measurements are just guesses because I don't measure anything...)

7am: Breastfeed (seems to eat a lot)
11am: Breastfeed
5 (?) Tbsp Cereal (Oatmeal or Barley)
1/2 jar fruit
3pm: Same as 11
6:30pm: Breastfeed
4-5 Tbsp Cereal
1/3 jar fruit
1/3 jar vegetables

I've stopped using Rice cereal because I think it did make him constipated. We are still introducing new fruits and will start the purreed meat/veg mixes next week (I'll probably replace the fruit at the 6:30pm meal). I've also started giving him Mum Mum rice rusks...I'm not really sure what they are for but, oh my goodness! It is so cute to watch him eat them! As I said- the amounts seem to increase almost daily- I just keep adding a bit more cereal each time I make it. And I know you were asking about VitD before- I've started mixing it in with the cereal at one of his meals (because I kept forgetting it!). Like Shelby- I only feed him until he doesn't seem to want it anymore- that's why some meals he only eats a spoonful or two. I don't force and I try not to stress! haha!

I feed her just at night rigth now. She started with cereal and now she is eating peas, carrots, and green beans. I just feed her until she turned away or closes her mouth. She is now eating a whole little container of the Gerber stage one plastic package. I started with veggies to make sure she likes them before fruit. I am introducing slowly since she already had a reaction to sweet potatoes. Good Luck!
