Mason woke up one morning and just decided that he was not going to nurse anymore. We tried and tried for about a week and he still was protesting sooooo I had to make the decision to start him on formula. He likes it, but will only drink the pre-mixed bottles which are so super expensive and last maybe 2 days max. A few friends of mine have said that they know people that made the decision to start them on whole milk at this age. I feel a little nervous because of everything you read, and the advice of the pediatricians but I was wondering if anyone has switched to milk a month early.
How did it work out, and did their bellies adapt well?

Thank you for your help!

2 days??? My boy has been formula fed since he was 2 months old and he eats a lot. His can lasts 5-6 days, though... Is your baby eating food as well?

Caio now drinks from 16-24 oz a day + food and snacks.

There are some less expensive formula, like Costco brand, walmart, safeway... It is very important that they drink brestmilk or formula until 1 year old. It has extra nutrients that you can't find in cow's milk.

It is worth the extra money. It is just for another month. :)

My pediatrician gave us the okay to start giving our daughter whole milk at 11 months. Since I am weaning her from breastfeeding at 10 1/2 monts, I will start giving her an ounce of whole milk and then finish give her breastmilk and will continue to up the amount until she is just drinking whole milk. I too give my daughter cereal every day to ensure she gets the iron needed as well as a variety vegetables and fruits and beans. Of course, you have to be comfortable with your decision. Good luck!

My son is nearly 11 months and is on cows milk now and he loves it great calcium for. Cows milk is not horrible and like Shanna said it is pasturised for us to drink, are you saying you have never drank cows milk Stephanie? Well Austin is thriving and hasn't been sick hardly ever so decided to wean him a month early. It's up to you really you know your child better than anyone else, best of luck xox

I give my daughter organic. I dont think cows milk is as horrible as you say Stephanie...but everyone has their own opinions :) People have been drinking milk from cows for how long? Do you eat cheese? Any kind of meats? Same thing...(maybe your a vegan?) Cows milk is made for baby cows but then it is pasturized and made for humans to drink. I actually just read that soy and rice milk do not have the same nutritional value as cows milk....So many things can cause ear infections and asthma...do you have pets? Or give your baby a bottle? Pets can cause allergies, being exposed to any kind of animal dander can cause allergies, feeding your baby a bottle can cause ear infections. Take into consideration your environment...Cows milk is the least of your worries if your thinking about allergies and asthma

Stephanie- sadly, nursing is not an option for us anymore. After 21/2 weeks of trying to get him to nurse and trying to pump what I could (which wasnt enough) I am all dried up. Just out of curiosity, what are you going to give your child when you stop nursing? Soy or Rice milk? I have considered soy, that is what I drink myself I just thought that the organic whole was better for him.....dont ask me why, it just seemed "healthier." Any ideas?

"Infant & Toddler Solid Food Guide of Alberta, Canada" states that you can start weaning from breastmilk or formula to whole cows milk at 9 months. As long as baby is getting enough iron in their diet. 1/2 of a cup of infant cereal is a days suppy of iron, I feed my daughter infant cereal every night before bath so she gets enough iron from that alone. I am still breasteeding but She has 2 nursing sessions a day and 2 bottles of homo milk a day. So, in my opinion, you are safe to him whole milk. Try in the morning first in case he gets gassy but my daughter has had no problems with it at all

Consider this.... Humans produce milk for their human babies.... Cows produce milk for their cow babies..... Im totally against giving kids cows milk at any age and not just for the fact that it has proteins and components that are MADE for baby cows. Even if its Organic Cows milk it is still full of mucus causing bacteria that can cause asthma, ear infections and IBS. Maybe Mason was just needing a break from the breast milk due to feeling not his 100% self, maybe you ate something that made it taste different, maybe he just was exploring alittle and tried to change things up. Id stick with water to drink, breast milk if possible, and then baby foods. Its just completley UNnatural. Try and reconsider and do some research on the dangers of dairy. Dont look to your doctor for everything, remember your health is in your hands and your hands only. Its up to you to research!:) Take care!!

I started my son on whole milk at 10 months. He took to it really well. But all babies are different and react to all things different. But I do know that you should do half whole milk with half formula to get there bodies ready for it. then start whole after 4 to 5 days.
