My 20 month old always seems to be tired. He sleeps for 13+ hrs at night but shows signs of tiredness 1 hr after he wakes. He also has 2 naps during the day and does the same thing after these naps. He is otherwise happy & healthy. Should I be worried that my toddler is always tired?

My daughter slept a lot like that when she was 2 years old. It wasn't uncommon for her to sleep 14 to 15 hours at night and then a three hour afternoon nap. She went through a phase of falling asleep at 3 or 4 pm and wanted to sleep straight through until early morning hours (if we woke her, she was such a beastly little thing that we WANTED her to go back to sleep!). She finally balanced out on her sleep patterns in the past 4 or 5 months (she is 37 mos now). I think some kids just sleep more than others, like some adults. However, it is worth mentioning to your pediatrician. Your child could be struggling with anemia or something else that is making him so tired.

At this age it is suggested that they get 12-14 hours of sleep a day, including naps.. Brandon goes down at 9pm each night, gets up at 8am (we usually have to wake him up), then takes a nap at noon for 1-2 hours (it varies).. I would maybe try to adjust his schedule to try and combine his 2 naps into one by moving the nap time back by about 15 mins. each day.. Especially if his naps are short.. Sometimes if Brandon takes an hour napt at noon he will take another short nap around 5:30-6pm.. This usually happens in the car.. If you are really concerned you can always contact your pediatrician to make sure there is nothing serious going on.. Each kid is different and if they are sleepy they usually need that rest.

That doesn't sound too good. Maybe the reason your toddler is always tired is that he is sleeping too much. I would bring him for some blood tests or something, or at least bring it up with your health care.
