When is it okay to give a 4 month old some water in a bottle? How much? I noticed at bath time that when my daughter got some water on her mouth she would just love to suck it all up. So I gave her some water in a bottle and she LOVED it. Is this okay? Anyone else give water? How much water should I give on top of her formula?

She's also waking up once a night for a feeding. I heard that I could try some water instead of formula when she wakes up in the middle of the night? Will that help her start to sleep all the way through? Any ideas let me know!!!

I started giving my daughter at 6 months because that is what I was advised to do by the health nurses. No more than 4 ounces a day and make sure she is filling up on formula before she gets the water. Now, my daughter drinks lots of water throughout the day but I still make sure she is only drinking water when she is thirsty not when she is hungry. Also, at 4 monthes she still needs her feed at night. She is still very young. My daughter is 10.5 months and she still needs one feed around 5-6am. Dont take that away from her.

My health vistior said that its fne from birth just about 2 oz of boiled water, i dont see why you thought to wait to 4 months but unfortunatly my son won't drink water?

You should still give your baby formula in the middle of the night if she's still hungry. I give my son water when I'm trying to get him to poop, but a couple ounces a day is ok, but not neccissary. :)

We have purified water that works good...we use it with her formula too.

My doctor recommended water any time between feedings when baby started acting hungry and it wasn't close to time to feed him yet. He didn't recommend any special preparation of the water though. We have city water and it is good quality. Maybe if you have well water you might want to boil it first...

I asked the doctor and he said it was just fine to give her water as long as it doesn't take the place of her formula.

I've heard from my doctor and read in a lot of books that you are NOT supposed to give your baby water until they are a year old, because it fills up their tummies without giving them nourishment. Water itself is not harmful to babies but babies that drink water are likely to not gain as much as they should.

We tried giving water in the middle of the night and it didn't work for us - just caused us all so much stress, tiredness and frustration because he was really quite hungry.
Apparently their tummies are big enough by 6 months to eat so that they don't have to wake in the night to eat. Matteo still wakes up around midnight and then at 6am (on a good night). They will eventually start sleeping through when they are ready and each baby is different...We've given him water and he drank it, but it isn't necessary till around 6 months.
