What is the average size for a 12 month old?

[deleted account] ( 45 moms have responded )

People have been commenting lately that my little boy looks small for his age. He is 12 months at the end of the month and is about 19 pounds, and about 27" tall. One lady asked if he was about 7-8 months old! Not sure what to think, is he really that small?

Every baby is different - every set of genes are different. My son is 20lbs and 27" tall at 12 months as well. The 6 month old that I baby sit is taller and heavier than him!

But, he was only 5.9 lbs 19" at birth. So he has more than trippled his birthweight. Plus, I am only 4'10" myself. Although, his father is a tall, bulky guy, it seams he has retained my size genetics. People on both sides of my family tend to be pretty small.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - my pediatrician always says, 'He's small, but look at yourself. It's nothing to be concerned about as long as he remains around the same percentile on the growth chart. If he all of a sudden goes from 10-15th down to less than 5th, then we might start asking questions about why he isn't growing." - point is, as long as he's growing, eating, healthy and active, nothing to lose sleep over. :-)

My son is also 1 and weighs 23 lbs and is 29" long...my thoughts are ALL babies develop and grow on their own time line!! Unless your sons doctor is concerned don't be too worried about what other people say....the important things are that he is happy and healthy.

[deleted account]

The actual medical averages are 29 inches and 22 Lbs for a 12 months old born at term. But being "averages"', il means that exactly half of the kids are above and exactly half are below! A better reference is that kids should add about 10 in and triple their birht weight in the first year.

So, unless you and your husband are above 6'5" or your son was 25 in when he was born and hasn't grown since, he is looking pretty good! My daughter was barely 17 lbs at her 12 months well-check which put her in the 10-15% tile. Given that she was born at the 3% tile, she is actually considered "espacially thriving".

Trust yourself and ignore "well-meaning" strangers! Is your son eating well? Is your son happy and playfull? Is your son progressing (both growing, gaining weight and adding new skills) regularly? Have you had to purchase entirely new wardrobe for him every 3 months or so?

I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as you are feeding him enough. Some babies don't grow at the same rate as others. My little man is in the 90th percintile for height but my doctor said was a tad underweight, but he eats about the same amount as a five year old!

Every baby is different. Your doctor will tell you if there is something wrong.

i have had the same thing, at my son's 1 year check up he was barely 19 lbs, but he comes from a pretty small family, i have three siblings and we are all pretty small people, especially when we werew babies, my doctor told me that as long as he is eating and drinking lots of fluids not to worry about it, some kids are bigger and some are smaller, i wouldn't worry about it

I believe as long as your little boy eats enough and is healthy you shouldn't have any cause for concern. What does your ped say?

I thought the same thing after my son's 1 year checkup. He was 18 lbs, 2 oz and 28.5 inches long. Since the last checkup at 9 months, he only gained 2 oz and grew 1/2 an inch long. I can't do anything about the height but I stopped nursing and started him on whole milk. We see the ped next week and I'm hoping that he gained a little bit of weight. I keep looking at other babies in his age and he looks a lot smaller/skinnier than the rest of them. I just tell myself that every baby is different and as long as he is healthy, I am happy with that.

My son is turned 1 July 24th. He was 7lbs at birth and now weighs 25lbs. My other 2 sons were 19 pounds at 1 but now look like your average 2 and 3 year old. So my younges is alot bigger than is brothers were at 1. I wouldnt worry about it. He is healthy and that is what matters.

My daughter is 20 lbs and 29 1/2 inches long and I get asked how old she is and nobody believes me that she is 1. She was born July 16,2008 and she was 2 1/2 weeks early. She is so small and petite. My niece who is 9 months old has out grown my daughter already.

My son weighs 10.5kg at 12 months which is about 23lb I think. They are supose to triple their birth weight if that gives you an idea. I think clothes must be big or something cos 6-9 and 9-12month clothes fit him nicely.

There is no "average" size. My son just went for his 12month shots and they weighed and measured him. He's 26lbas and is 3 feet tall! Got me a big boy, one would never know that he was only 6lbs 10oz when he was born!

my daughter is 12 months and she is 20lbs and 32in tall. Because she is tall she looks slim in comparison to other kids her age. She eats a very balanced and natural home cooked diet (nothing from a container) and I am still BFing. The doctor actually told me she is healthier than bigger kids because there is absolutely no fillers in her nutricion..

Kids come in different sizes, as long as he is eating well and is full of energy you don't have anything to worry about...

Oh, one more thing..parents do come in different sizes as well, genetics are a very important factor.

My daughter is 20 pounds, turned a year on 7/19, 28" in length. She is on the small side, but she eats well and is growing fine. I know some babies are close to 25+ lbs! Makes ours seem little. As long as he's eating, I wouldn't worry. Is he walking yet? Mine has been the last 2 months, so she is getting a lot more exercise =)

I wouldn't worry about it. All children are different. My 3 yr. old was born at 6lbs and by the time she was 12 months she was still wearing 6--9 months clothes. Now my other daughter who just turned a year old was a little over 9lbs when she was born at is at 24lbs now. It's all in the genes.

[deleted account]

My son is the same size as yours and I get the "he's so small" comments all the time. It bothered me to begin with b/c I'm so tall and DH is about 5'10" but as long as he's healthy, I'm ok.

My daughters 12 month check up is not until next month, even though she is already 12 months. Last time i weighed her, about a month ago, she was 19 lbs. What people dont understand is that the weight chart that you compare to (percentile) is the average weight/height of babies. Below the 1-2 percentile would be below average and above the 99th percentile would be considered above average. As long as your baby is still within that chart and still growing, you dont have to worry :)

im pretty sure that 20lbs is about right for a 1yr old, so one pound behind is just fine. my son just turned 1 july 1st and he is 23lbs 31in tall...everyone thought he was 1 at 9 months. he has already caught up with his 2 year old cousin

My son was 26 lbs. & 32 in. at his 12 month well baby. We have the opposite situation because most people think he is older than he actually is. We asked the doctor about it because our families are vertically challenged yet my son is in the 97th percentile for height. Our pediatrician said that right now he is growing quickly but he'll probably eventually level out as he gets older.

My son went to the doctor yesterday. He is 24.5lb and 31 inches long. But he is on top of the chart (I think 90-95% height).

I think that as long as he is healthy and developing his skills well, he should be fine. And that doesn't mean that he will be small forever. He can still become a tall person - and my son on the other hand can be a short man in the future.

My daughter just had her 12 month checkup a few days ago. She weighed 24 lbs 12 oz and was 31" tall. But she is much bigger than the average baby--she was in the 93rd percentile for her weight and 97th percentile for her height. I don't think 19 lbs is too small--I have an 18 month old nephew that only weighs 21 lbs.

My daughter turned 1 on the 9th. She is almost 16 lbs. and 27 in. long. Her doctor was concerned so tests were run. They all came back normal. She's just little!

[deleted account]

i get that too, my daughter is 18lbs and 29in ...she barely fits into 12mon clothing . ... but the clothing says 20-27lbs or something so i dunno, i really dont think the is an avg weight.

[deleted account]

Not sure what average actually is, but he's a good size for his age. Talk to the doctor about it when you go to your sons check up.

i dont think there is a average size for a 12 month old im not to sure how heavy my wee man is but boys seem to go slower then girls until they hit their teenage years so he may catch up then

[deleted account]

My daughter turned a year old on 7/20. She had her 12 month doctor visit this morning, & she weighed 17 pounds, 7 ounces. She is 28" long. That put her in the 5% for weight & 20% for height. Her doctor said she's petite, but growing steadily. Size doesn't matter as long as they are steadily growing. If your pediatrician isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either.
