Anybody's baby's cord stump still on after 7 weeks??

My son is nearly 6 weeks and still has his umbilical cord. He had his 6 week check-up today and the ped. ordered a blood test to check his immune function. Apparently the immune system is what causes the cord to fall off; it rejects it as a foreign body. After 3 weeks it can be a red flag that there is a problem. Especially in boys.

I'm right there with you, my son is 7 weeks tomorrow and his cord still hasn't fallen off. Initially the doctor told us to keep it dry and use"lots of alcohol" each diaper change to help it dry out. Today at his appointment she said she would have to cut it but once she looked closer she decided to check back in a week and have me use hydrogen peroxide on it until then. I can't wait for it to fall and am really hoping it does before we go back next week poor little guy. (she said his belly button wouldn't look very "pretty" if she has to cut it)

my son'a stump fell off within 10 days. the hospital told me not to use alcohol, just to keep the area dry and uncovered by the diaper. it helped alot. he curcumsision healed before 2 wks

My daughter was 5 weeks old when hers fell out. The doc said it was normal and to just keep cleaning it with an alcohol swab at least once a day and to pull back the skin and get down inside a bit to clean so it wouldn't get infected. The alcohol helps to dry it out. Normal baths can cause water to get in there and extra dirt that can cause infections. Thats why your supposed to sponge bathe. I got tired of sponge bathing too and just gave her a semi normal bath. I made sure not to let water get near her belly button. She enjoyed kicking in the water!!

My 2nd son was the same way it would never fall off I used alcohol with every diaper change. He had to go to the Dr. every week for almost a month to get silver nitrate put on it. Umbilical Granuloma is what his dr called it. It was very annoying for sure. My 1st son and my newborn lost theirs right away and I always treated them the same with alcohol all the time. i was bathing my son everyday when his cord stump was on n i didnt use wipes just a wet cotton bud it fell off in the first week good luck

You say you want to give him a tub bath- why not now?! My midwives told me that it was absolutley fine to do so even when the cord is still there. I gave mine a bath everyday from birth and then cleaned the belly button with alcohol wipes when i got her out the bath and it fell off after 1 1/2 wks

The Doc wants to see my son and take a look at the cord stump next week to be sure it is okay - it doesn't seem to be infected. The Doc's office told me to keep using alcohol wipes. Thanks for all the posts.

Continue to use the alcohol, believe it or not it is drying it out more then if you were not using it. whatever you do dont pull it off.

My daughter is two months old today. I took her to the Dr. last week b/c her cord had not completely healed yet. The Dr. used silver nitrate to dry out her belly button- he was concerned that it might get infected. I was also using alcohol twice a day-I guess next time around I won't do that.

I was told to leave it alone - let it completely AIR DRY and it will shrivel and fall off. That it did. We did use a q-tip to clean out the 'crud' at the base as it was healing, but there wasn't much there. I would say stop using alcohol on it and just make sure the diaper is folded down so it gets as much air as possible.

I was told not to use the alcohol so much because it would cause it to stay on longer. We cleaned it once a day and that seemed to be good enough...you could try that. Sorry it is taking so long but hopefully it will come off soon!
