My beautiful, happy and on the go son has taken to banging his head and flailing about any time he's unhappy and/or overtired...usually we can distract him to calm him down (walk him around, show him the dog, a balloon, whatever!) but it's still scary! He even has a bruise or 2 on his little forehead to prove it...I know he'll grow out of it, but tell me I'm not alone with this fun phase!?

Christina, I can tell you right now that your son understands you. He may not be able to vocalize it, but one year olds understand A LOT! Don't ever kid yourself that babies and young children are some dumb little creatures that could not understand what is being said. That is a load of bull that someone perpetuated when they decided that comprehension is equated with ability to talk.

Both of my daughter did/do this. My oldest broke herself of it when she decided to throw a tantrum on the driveway...yea, that was unpleasant but she never did it again. My youngest does it on the wall or chair cushion. He will outgrow it and don't be so concerned. He may bruise, but he will not hit his own head hard enough to give him brain damage or anything.

Our family listens to heavy metal however my son hasn't learned how to headbang yet ;). Seriously though, I recall reading about it in What to Expect so it must be a relatively common issue.

Oh god.. yes, my son is fearless! he is 11 months and runs full speed into everything. He will throw his self back. He will headbutt you no matter what. He will have a fit if he doesn't get what he wants. He is the only child and he knows it. He trips over his own feet because he trys to walk as fast as possible. Then when he falls, he will come over and hit anyone who saw it. When he hears music his little head will move to every beat. He is a funny little guy with his own personality. It's fun to have him around!

Yes!! My son is such a happy go lucky little guy, but he does the exact same thing!!! My husband was worried, but I am sure it is just a phase ( although I will be mentioning it to my pediatrician at his one year!)

My son does it when he is mad, accidentally bumps his head, and just for the fun of it! Mom told me to ignore him but if I give him a firm no he stops.

my daughter flails all over when she isn't getting her way and when she is put in the crib she bangs her head on the changing table as part of her temper tantrum! It is ridiculous.

My son does that too. He will just fall out in the floor and headbutt the floor or the couch or whatever is in his reach. He has even hit the concrete floor because the cat walked passed him.

My almost 1 year old has just started banging his head when tired or cross and can really hurt himself. I am trying not to draw to much attention to it and instead try to distract him when I feel it might happen. He also has some bruises on his forehead from this headbanging and also general falling down as he tries to walk. Hoping it will all pass and is just a phase! He is so active, never stops exploring, trying to climb, get into tight spaces etc etc!
