My ped said to start my baby on cereal in her bottle at 2 mos. i gave her 3-4 cereal bottles a day mostly at bedtime and middle of the night. Now I still do that but I also put a little cereal in her other bottles to thicken them up. She tollerates the cereal so well. She is able to keep it down without spitting up. It also seems like she swallows less air and has less gas with the cereal. She is 3 1/2 months now and we are working on increasing her cereal bottles, but we also had to give her a little diluted juice to help with some mild constipation. She's doing great!

My baby is now 20 weeks old but i didn't give her any cereal yet...according to research baby should introduce to any solid or puree food at 4 - 6 months but preferably at 6 months..you have to look at your baby her readiness on solid food..like lost of tongue trust and can support herself when sitting down..

My son was vomiting and all the doctor would say is as long as he's not losing weight he's fine..well i took advice from online forums and started giving him cereal in his bottles..not a lot a baby spoon full for a 6oz bottle..since then he hasn't vomited once..and that was over a month ago!

I started feeding my son cereal in his bottle when he was 2 months old. He gets it in the morning with his first bottle and in his last bottle at night. I give him 1 ounce of cereal with 6 ounces of formula. He also has reflux but it appears to be getting better since I started the cereal, and since he started eating it has almost disappeared.

Del,
My son had the same thing. Our doc told us to make a bottle and put half the amount of cereal as we did formula, so two scoops formula, one scoop cereal. /it has helped him with the psitting up, the crying and he is fuller longer. Hope this helps!

I think 3-4 weeks is awfully young to start cereal. His body may not be ready to process something like cereal. At that age, I think it's best to just feed formula/breast milk on demand? My doc tells us to wait until 4 months to start cereal... and not to put it in the bottle, but to spoon feed it. Don't shoot the messenger! This is obviously "new" advice, as my mom and grandma are always asking why I don't give the baby cereal because their kids came home from the hospital eating it...lol - good luck!

I've been adding cereal to my son's nighttime bottle for a few weeks. He's just shy of 3 months now. I use the same size scoop we use for formula. I do 1 scoop for each 2oz of formula (so 2 scoops for 4oz bottles, 4 scoops for 8oz). I have noticed some difference in his sleep pattern and am hoping he'll get even better when he goes on baby food next week (at 3 months) before bed.

Baby food for a 3 month old??? If i'm reading this right i think you need to consult your Dr as it is at 6 months that you can introduce baby food and change kinds every 3-4 days to make sure their are no allergies. There is a 4 month cereal but baby food....no way

There is a starter cereal ladies...it's for children 4m-6m...then you can give the 6m cereals with flavors. I too don't like seeing people put cereal in bottles, it is a choking hazord in my opinion. My daughter eats rice cereal every morning and night and she still gets up at least once. And i'm fine with it. I am a mother and it's what comes with it. It doesnt' last for years on end, it's a few months out of my life to get my a$$ out of bed to feed my child and i wouldn't change it for the world! Her face lights up when she sees me even at 3am and i can't help but smile. Why are their so many mom's now a days trying to get their children to sleep through before they are obviously ready too...

It makes me sad to hear when mommas give their babies cereal before they are actually ready. It is so hard on a baby to digest cereal before they are ready. My older girls around 7 months old before they had cereal and I will wait the same with my 4 month old.

My son has such severe reflux he may be getting surgery and if it's because of reflux reason then use cereal, if your looking for sleep well that's not the best reason as it does disrupt there digestion system and increase child hood obesity, so for reflux it's 1/2 tbs to oz:
4 oz bottle
2 Tbs cereal, make sure it's rice.
However many scoops for 4 oz bottle
4 oz's of water!

my pediatrician said some babies just need more... but to NOT put it in the bottle. He had me mix up about 4 tablespoons using formula and spoon feeding her. It took her about 2 spoonfuls to get the hang of it and she's much more satisfied now.

My sons ped has been practicing for 50 years all he had to do is pick my son up and he could tell my any if all that was wrong with him.... They dont want you to give ANY cereal til 4 months BUT I know my son well enough to know the formula wasnt enough anymore. He sleeps all through the night now! And my doctor is the BEST EVER! Yet still doesnt what you to give it to him. Doctors DO NOT know everything. :) No matter how good they are...

I started putting it in my daughters bottle when she was 6 weeks. I just made the hole in the nipple a little larger to let the cereal out and put one scoop of formula and a few scoops of cereal, I make it so its thick by runny (if that makes sense). If I tip the bottle to the side it is not nearly as liquid-y as formula but it all moves to the nipple (Sorry if its confusing....)

1 ounce of cereal to every 4 ounces of formula is what I do for a bottle before bedtime. I also put 2 tblespns of cereal in all his bottles. He's 3 and a half months and I just started alternating oatmeal and rice because rice constipates him. The oatmeal helps to keep him regulated as well as he stays full longer. goodluck... :)

I started my daughter on crushed up instant wheat cereal in her milk when she was 5 weeks. She seemed like she was always hungry and this sorted her out really quickly. She gets a teaspoon of it in each 6oz bottle. I made the mistake of telling the health nurse who went a bit crazy with me but at the end of the day I know my daughter and what she needs. The nurse didn`t have kids so didn`t know. You can`t get all the answers from a text book. You know as a mother what is best for your child. Go with your instincts.

you got that right!!  They think they know everything when we are the ones at home waking up every hour on the hour!!  My son is 3 months going on four months and at night I give him a bottle with one ounce of cereal one ouce of baby food and two ounces of formula in a bottle with the nipple cut pretty big so he can get it out.  I also let him set in my lap sitting up for at least a half an hour after that I rock him to sleep put him in his bassinet and he sleeps all night.  So these doctors dont know everything!!  :)

I put a spoonful for every 2ounces and have since my son was 4 weeks old. It has helped him go longer in between feedings & kept him from spitting up as much, however the burning in his throat did not subside. He is 9 weeks old now and was just prescribed zantac syrup for his reflux and between the rice cereal and his new prescription, I have my happy baby back! No more burning in the throat.

I was told to do a teaspoon per ounces by the pediatrician but did that and he didn't spit up at all but he also was severely constipated and had hard stools. I couldn't handle watching him struggle like that so I started going down to one baby teaspoon per 2 ounces and he does really well with that. You can also try switching to AR formula by Enfamil. My brother did that with his babies and they seem to do better on it but really, its just thickened formula with rice starch so pretty much the same as adding it yourself.

I have been spoon feeding cereal to my 2 month old for 3 weeks now. The day care does not allow any cereal in his bottle, so he had to learn. Before that he had cereal in his bottle since he was about a week and a half. He was always hungry and I remembered that giving my first son a cereal bottle before bed would help him sleep through the night. My mom says that when I was born the doctor told her that I should have been eating cereal three times a day as soon as I came home from the hospital. You just have to do what you think is right, the doctors don't always know what is best.

Hi - I have used rice cereal in my son's bottle since about 2 weeks old. I use 1 Tablespoon per ounce of formula (or breast milk) be aware this does cause constipation - use 1 teaspoon of prune juice (can use apple although i kinda guess on the amount and prune works much better and is easier to control) to even out her system it will fill her up and she most likely sleep through the night. May also ask the doctor to prescribe ranitidine  ( i believe its the generic for zantac) this helps also with reflux - my son takes it 2x daily along with the cereal in every bottle. I have spoken to other mom's and they tell me that some babies grow out of this...

Using them both seems to help her. I just give her the cereal in the morning and then before bed time. I hope he gets better. I also hope this helped.

My son is 2 1/2 months old and I give him 2 tbs of rice cereal in a 5 oz bottle with formula. He does really good with that. Then when he wakes up in the early morning I usually give him another 1/2 to 1 tbs of cereal in that bottle as well. He has done very well with it except for the constipation issue. For the constipation we have been giving him 1oz to 2 oz of diluted prune juice a day.
