How often does your breastfed baby poop? For a while my son was going 6-7 days without a bowel movement. My pediatrician told me to give him karo syrup in 1.5 oz of water and that helps a little but still he is only going every 3-4 days. Is this common in breastfed babies?

Bit late answering this but I'd get a new pediatrician! It's normal for exclusively bf babies to go for two weeks without pooing. I'd get feeding advice from LLL.

I have been told not to worry about it. Mine girl was having one about 2 twice a week and that was it. This lasted for a bout a month and half and now she is having more again. Lactation people and doctors and books say that they could go up to two weeks without. As long as you are ONLY breastfeeding, this is normal.

My daughter was like that and was very grizzly with it, however second time round I have offered boiled water as well and my boy goes everyday or every second day. I think they maybe need additional moisture to stop it accumulating in their bowel.

My 4 month old was only pooping two or three times a month. She's solely breastfed. It's totally normal for breastfed babies to go a while between poops. Their bodies can use almost all of the breast milk, with little waste. It's VERY uncommon for a breastfed baby to be constipated. I wouldn't give baby anything to make him go. It's not necessary. As long as baby doesn't show signs of strain, he will go in time.

i wouldn't worry too much like all the other moms have said breast fed babies don't have to poop everyday, but if you find that he is cranky or upset it might be because something you ate didn't agree with his stomach, sometimes depending on what i eat, my little guy will go four time in one day and other times he won't go for a few days.

My understanding is that breastfed babies can go all day every day or as little as every 2 weeks. Thats what I was always told with all of mine

My co-workers lil boy did that. The Ped explained that the breast milk was perfect for his system...he broke everything down and didn't 'waste' anything. Mine on the other hand goes everyday. (He is also getting formula supplements) As long as it doesn't look like he is hurting from not pooping he should be okay.

He is 4 1/2 months old. I am exclusively breastfeeding, and I haven't introduced cereal yet...

yeah it can be normal in an exclusively breastfed baby but if you've introduce babyfood it could be constipation i would do the karo syrup and lay off the food/cereal and see how long before he poops

Hi,

How old is your baby? My daughter is 4 months old and last month it happend the same thing. she didnt poop for 5 days. I talked to my pediatrician and he told me it is just normal for a breastfed baby at this age. He told me that she can go up to 6 days without pooping, But im telling you, when she'll poop its gonna be a BIG one!
