I know that this is going to sound mean and you'll go without sleep for a few nights but just don't give him water to frink at night. My little boy was the same way. He wanted to drink 4 cups of water at night and then wake up soaked. I finally just had to go though a few night with little sleep and then he started sleeping throw with out asking for something to drink. It's just like when you take them off the bottle or sleeping in there own bed. I hope this helps and it works for you like it did me.

Ahhh He has learned the fine art of manipulation. He knows mommy isnt going to let him go thirsty and he uses that to get your undying attention at night. That attention is not needed and not warrented. Stop giving him water at night! Give him one cup of water to sip, let him know that is all he gets for the night. Be consistant and firm. If he wakes in the night wanting more water and he is lucid enough take him ot the potty instead. He is old enough now to self soothe himself without relying on other objects or you. Just stop giving him the water, you are in control of that not him. Good luck!

Maybe try a dinner time drink and let him know that it's his last drink for the night. And then of course make sure he goes to the toilet just before bed. Good luck.

Does he have access to a potty in the bedroom? And is it possible to not let him have 4 cups of water throughout the night or is this how he falls back to sleep? I'm sure if you eliminated the water throughout the night, or at least most of it, that will help with how often he has to go.

Otherwise he's only 2.5 years (almost) now if he's a July '09 baby so count your blessings that he's potty trained throughout the day and keep him in diapers overnight till he's a little older, or even those overnight pull-ups they have.
