My son spits up almost everything he eats, every time he eats, up to 3 hours after hes eaten. I have tried changing to soy formula, feeding him less, constant burping, etc. Nothing seems to help! His pediatricians always tell me something differant because we are military, and never see the same doctor. One says if hes spitting up to feed him less because hes to full. Another tells me to keep feeding him the necessary 30 oz.of formula, and if he spits up then, "oh well". Anyone have any ideas???

Hi there, I strongly recommend Dr.Browns bottles. My son is a spitter too and these bottles have really help reduce the spit up. You can also try Mylcon drops between feeding. But in general, if your baby does not seem disturbed by the spit up and is gaining weight, he would be considered to be a "happy spitter" :)

Is it formula that he is spitting up? Have you tried sensitive baby formula? Our PX here has some cheap brand that is "gentle" and "sensitive" My baby doesnt spit those back up (*we have the same issue, btw*) If it is just formula he spits up, cut him back off of that and give him more solids. He might be telling you he is ready for more solid food!

My baby is a severe spitter, I have tried every thing to fix it, formula, gaviscon, zactac I have taken her to the doc's numerous times and she has even had an altrasound to make sure there was nothing wrong. I have since come to the conclusion that she is just a spitter and will eventually grow out of it (I hope) she is a happy baby and sleeps very well and is still gaining weight. Although all the laundry I could do without ;)

Hey Kimberly,
My son was the same way. He always spit up horrendously since birth. He was spitting up on everyone and on everything. So i told the doc he pretty much had acid reflux because some of his spit up was clear. Then he gave me zantac. That helped a little but not that much. It helped with him being so uncomfortable...,.but then another doc said try starting cereal....then I was feeling like he was blowing up so fast and pooping nasty liquid poops....so then I switched formulas to soy....and also backed down his intake of oz. he is 5 months and has only been on 6 oz every 5-6 hours. It has also help him sleep better too since he was horrible at that. Try spacing his food out more and being very strict with how much you give him....Also I knew what my mom gave me since i was COLICKY and my first son had stomach probs too.......we all had pepperment tea in our bottle. its very gentle and very safe for them. helps calm the stomach SO much!!!! I put oz formula in 4 oz water. made the tea in a mug and poured the 2oz of tea to make 6 oz. Did one in the am one at afternoon nap and one at night till his stomach started to calm itself down. then now he just gets one whenever i think he has been over-fed or just spitting up alot. My son is the worst burper every so yours is prob alot alike!! they wont ever stop i dont think. but you do worry so much about intake!! good luck darlin!

My daughter started doing the same think when she was 5 weeks old, and it was acid reflux. She has been on "zantac" since then, and we've had to increase the dosage twice now. And each time before increasing, she would start spitting up almost everything she ate, and once we increased her meds then she would keep all her breastmilk down again. Also making sure my daughter stayed laying on her back for atleast 30-60 minutes after she ate, helped too. Good Luck!

My son did the same for about 2 months. (We did so much washing during that time!) Sometimes he was quite distressed until he brought up some milk. However, despite this, he continued to grow and put on weight so I wasn't too concerned. It seems to be settling down now he's started on solids and is 5 months of age. Maybe it's just an immature digestive tract that is to blame?

I was watching the Dr's a few weeks ago and they had a question as to how much spit up is too much for a baby. The Dr did a demonstration where he spilt one oz. of milk. He explained that just a tiny amount of spit up can look like a lot. When he spilled it, I was surprised how much spit up it looked like, considering it was only one oz. So it may not be as much as you think.

With my son, I always try to keep him sitting up after he eats. I find that the more I stimulate him after he eats, the more likely he is to spit up. If I carry him around, or play with him, the small amount of pressure that I place on his stomach can cause him to spit up. I would try not doing too much with him after he eats. I read something not long ago that suggested that you should try propping them up to sleep. That the gravity would help hold there food down. I have not tried this, but if you do, just be careful what you use to prop him up so he is safe while he sleeps. I think they make wedges that help elivate them if that is something you wanted to try. He'll probably grow out of it. I would make sure that he is not in pain when he is spitting up. If he seems okay when he is doing it, it is probably okay and he will eventually grow out of it. Best of luck to you.

very possible that its reflux, if they put him on medicine it may work and you may want to talk to the doctor about putting cereal in his bottles, my sons doctor said that the gravity of the cereal will help keep it down better, alot of times they wont even worry about unless they lose weight mine lost alb the first week he was born and was hospitalized for it so next time you go in ask them it may help!! Good luck!!

My daughter is 4 months old and she is a spitter too...We have tried rice cereal in every bottle, and it seems to help but not completely. Her doctor says its Acid Reflux, but she is a happy baby and she doesn't seem to be hurting. She is sleeping through the night and wakes up happy, so I dont know what else to try.

My older daughter did the same thing. We tried soy formula and it helped, but not that much. Tricare will allow you to go to a civilian pediatrician! Just go to your local tricare office and tell them where you want to take the baby! My two daughters and I are military dependents and on tricare prime, and we all see civilian doctors (got so fed up on post! I even got a civilian OB for my pregnancies! If they give you a hard time, keep pushing - the squeaky wheel gets the grease!). My pediatrician said as long as she's steadily gaining weight, to not really worry about the spitting up (but it was annoying and the laundry was ridiculous). Sorry I wasn't much help - but I definitely recommend getting a civilian doc!

My son is a chucker... He was very uncomfortable for a few months, but a few sessions at the chiropractor and he is on a chemist formulated suspension 'Colicare' and the spewing has dropped off and now doesn't really bother him much at all!

My doctor figured it was a sensitivity to the lactose in milk. There is even lactose in soy formula. I went with the lactose free formula first and it has been a lot better. She still spits up a bit but it isn't that bad. The lactose free formula is the same price as regular formula so I would try that first.

My little girl was like that too and i just assumed it was milk acid reflux but it didnt bother her when she spat up, she still spits up but not as much as she did before. I just keep her in a sitting possition for about a half hour after she eats and then let her down to play and it seems to help keep her food down. I also sstarted her on cereal and bananas and she really is doing good now. Hope that helps =)

our little girl is on prilosec...the zantac worked for a few weeks and then was worse than before...since shes been on the prilosec and nutramigen she is a super happy baby!! and when she spits up she laughs like its the funniest thing ever..but like i said some babies just tend to spit up more than others...luckily that usually starts to slow down some once they are on solids. i have noticed since we started our leigha on cereal her spitting up has drastically slowed down, not gone but less. (the cereal in the bottle never worked for her, shes been doing it from a spoon for little over a month now) but bibs are a lifesaver....its a constant part of her outfits :-)

My son is super happy too, but they did a upper GI and he has severe reflux. It can also cause them to be stuffy. Also it helps to keep them upright after they eat. I would talk to the Dr. about some zantac.

Hi Kimberly,
I know what you mean. My daughter spits up constantly, I thought the same as the doctors have told you but nothing worked. Ive seen my GP several times about it and he keeps telling me "its fine, shes gaining weight" and so on but as a mother I couldn't help but be concerned.
I even stopped breast feeding in case it was some kind of intolerance but the formula only seemed to slow it down for a few days then she was back to the usual 4 or 5 sets of clothes a day. If you go to a chemist and look in the baby section they have a few things available without prescription. Baby gaviscon - expensive for what you get but if it just too much acid you may only need it every once and a while but the best thing I found was a thickner - you add a few spoons to the bottle just before you feed him (some special formulas are made with it but I found mixing it in myself better as you can adjust the thickness).
Best of luck

I thought that it could be reflux, but he doesnt fuss about it, and its not exactly projectile vomit.. He just spits up and keeps on laughing.. (My parents say I was the same way) And I totally know about tons of laundry!! He changes clothes at least 3 times a day and goes through 3-5 bibs, while I go through a few outfits myself! :-)

does he get upset when he spits up....like it burns? our little girl did that alot...would spit up then scream and arch her back alot...turns out she has acid reflux..she has been on medicine since 3 weeks old and is on enfamil nutramigen. she still spits up but doesnt scream anymore and doenst turn away from the bottle. if the spitting up doesnt bother him and he is gaining weight then its probably ok..some babies are just more spitty than others
