My dughter is 71/2 months and I stopped her rice cereal, she was starting to get constipated. She eats veggies and fruit and bottles. Should I switch to oatmeal or is that even necessary? Can't I just stick to the fruits and veggies? What do you do?

Someone earlier said that they're son was constipated when teething...MINE TOO! My daughter adn every other child I know, got diarreah, but not my son...constipations. I was a little concerned at first because we just introduced fruits and veggies and oatmeal (which definately helped my daughter when she got a little backed up). and on top of all that, I breastfeed, so i KNEW he was getting enough to drink and plenty of fiber and good stuff...it was just teething...just yesterday he finally blew out a couple diapers after two days of just little hard poops...and he 1st tooth arrived a week ago!!

My guy is 8 months and he gets oatmeal for breakfast and veggies and rice for lunch, no constipation problems but we have noticed a thickening of stool- so he gets fruit for dinner with no cereal.

I am just going to stop the baby cereals when WIC stops giving it or until the doctor says she doesn't need it. I usually mix rice cereal with baby food to make it thicker. I also mix it with water so it doesn't taste like formula so she gets used to food taste. Lol. She also eats some foods off my plate.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I took her off the cereal, she is doing great. And two days ago a tooth broke through so hey maybe shes in the club of having that problem while teething. Thanks again!

For a couple of months, I wasn't giving my little one enough cereal... just fruits and veggies because of the same thing, constipation. We just found out that his iron count is really low and have to go back for more testing. After a little research I am sure it is because of the lack of Cereal. So I started back with 2 servings a day and a serving of yogurt for the constipation (it works like a charm). Going back tomorrow to see if his iron count is up yet!

I disagree with apples not helping, they have fiber. Also, he loves it when we mix his food with the cereal, so you could put prunes mixed in with the rice cereal. It let's us get in the cereal he needs and tastes extra yummy to him and helps him stay regular.

My daughter is also 7 1/2 months old and was the same way, with rice cereal. i feed her a bit in the afternoon and the meal before her bottle at bed time and i always follow up with a few tsps of prunes or apricots. which has helped a whole lot.

also, stay away from apple and banana when they are constipated, it doesnt help any. im not sure how long you feed them the cereal for myself but i do know its an important introduction into their diet.

I buy my son different cereals...he likes them all :)
I still feed him cereal and he is 33 wks (8mths on the 12 of march). I give he a "big" bowl in the morning and not so much for lunch and supper....he still has bottles too but down to 3-4 per day of 6-8oz each. I also feed him fruits and veggies at lunch and supper, I just don't give as much cereal then.

My doctor said it was important to give my son cereal because of the iron in it. We got new Gerber rice cereal with mixed fruit and it is whole grain, which may help, also. It has apple and banana flakes in it. He LOVES it and definitely does not have any trouble going, haha! Also he loves prune baby food which will help with the constipation or even apple baby food. Good luck!

Weetabix mixed with their milk and some fruit. And at this stage there is not problems with just fruits and veg as they still get most of thier vitamins and stuff from thier milk.

My son wont touch baby cereals, and it was the health visitor that suggested Weetabix. The other thing i sometimes do is the mixed baby fruits in a jar, only half and add baby rice to this to thicken it out seams to work to.

As for constripation, give them some cooled boiled water occassionally.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rice cereal. It does have fiber in it. I add oatmeal to my little man's veggies and fruit, just thicken it up a little, but that's about it. He has acid reflux though, so he gets rice cereal in every bottle. We are trying to cut back on the cereal in his bottle. As long as she is getting formula or breastmilk that is really what she needs for nutrition.

oatmeal will help with her constipation, it is rich in fiber. you can try giving her pureed prunes or prune juice or apple sauce too. the rice shouldn't be making her constipated, especially if she has been eating it for a while. it may be something else in her diet or she is having a tooth come in. all the books told me babies get diahrea when their teeth come in but my son had his second tooth come in last week and with both of them he was constipated for 3 days. he is 7 months old.

on an unrelated note, do you feed her yogurt? i don't have any girls but i heard from a friend who has 4 girls that it is very good for their digestion and helps prevent yeast infections.
