How long does your 10month old nap for? And how many naps a day do they have?

My daughter will be 10 months on the 22nd and she has slept through the night from 6 weeks, so I have never had to worry about that. But she still has 2 naps a day, which I am concerned is too much for a 10 month old.
She goes to bed at night 7.30-8pm and wakes up around 6.30-7.30am. But by about 10am she is ready for a nap which is usually an hour long. Then by 2pm she is ready for another nap, and this one is always the longer nap and can be up to 2 hours long. Is this too much? How long and when are other babies napping for?
Thanks :-)

My girls always took long naps! If your pediatrician doesnt have any concern then I wouldn't stress about it! My youngest two (2&3) wake up around 7 or 8 then eat breakfast then around 12 or 1 go back down for another nap. I work during the day and my hubby watches them so they wake up at different time after their nap but it usually last 2-3 hrs!

My son, who is almost 2, had 2 daytime naps untill about 6 months ago, so I wouldn't worry too much. My 10 month old daughter has one nap, but its usually a long one lol She goes down between 12 and 2 and sometimes wont wake up till about 5! She loves her sleep and we never have a problem with her going to sleep at night.

I know exactly how you feel. I had to let my DD cry herself to sleep the other night. It seemed like she was crying for hours but it was less than 30 mins. I felt really bad and after she was alseep i couldn't help but cry. I told my mom about. She told me that sometimes you just have to tell them cry. I just can't do that sometimes.
My DD problem is not a schedule, it's that she used to sleep with me and she is used to laying next to me...

My 10 month old daughter has slept through the night since she was 5-6 wks old, and sleeps around 10-11 hours. She has always been very sporadic with how much she sleeps during the day. Sometimes she takes 2 naps and sometimes 1. When she only takes one, it is normally around 2 hours. When she takes 2, they are both around 45 minutes to an hour. Has anybody else had their 10 month old transition to one nap a day? She is happy as a clam most of the time so I would assume that either 1 or 2 is fine. And the doctor didnt seem concerned at her 9 month checkup. Any thoughts or advice?

My son is 10 months he was 10 weeks prem, he has a pulmary valve stenosis which I think it what's making him sleepy, his sleeping is rediculous now and that of a teenager, he goes down at 7pm up at 8am has breakfast and milk then is asleep at 10 till 12/1 then up for lunch but he lasts approx 2 hrs n he will fall asleep anywhere he then goes back down from about 2 ISh till 4:30/5 if I try to wake him he just gets so upset, I make sure he gets the right vitamins etc and he is checked regularly by health visitor, I can't see that this amount of sleep is normal

Compared to my 10 month old, thats not alot. She naps 3 or 4 times a day and each nap is between 1-3 hours long. She goes to sleep at 10pm and wakes up at about 8am, and her naps are spaced out during the day. Count it as a blessing because some babies this wont nap at all during the day. I don't think there's anything wrong, I just think she's a baby who loves her sleep. :)

I dont think that it is that unusual for a 10 mont old to sleep that much. My son Gavin goes to bed about 8 and wakes up about 7:30 and then he is ready for another nap at about 10:30.... it usulay last about 1 hour. then at 2 he is ready to take another nat that last about 2- 2 1/2 hours. it may be that they just dont get a "restfull" night of sleep.

my little boy has also slept through the night since he was 6 weeks aswell, he is 10 months old and his naps vary from day to day, i think as long as she is still sleeping through the night there is no need to cut out naps as she obviously still needs them! my little boy sleeps from 6pm - 7am has a 2 hour nap at 9 and a hour at 2pm. some days he will have longer otherdaays he will have less! so yeah as long as she is still sleeping through the night i think its fine!! remember she is still doing alot of growing!

My son is 10 mos old and he sleeps from 8-8:30ish till 6:30 most every night.. cept when he was breaking his bottom teeth :( His naps are random.. usually 2 a day but they can range in length from 1 hr to 3. I'm not worried at all about the amt of sleep he's getting unless it's not enough (meaning under 12 hrs). alot of articles I've read suggest 12-14 hrs a day so I'm going off of that.

My son will wake up sometimes as early as 6:30 (because of my neighbors loud truck) but usually at around 8 AM. He get's breakfast and then is ready for a nap around 10 after playtime. He sleeps until about noon, then eats lunch, and then is ready for another nap at around 2. He will sleep until about 3:30, and sometimes he takes another nap after dinner (6:30) wake up for a little to play, and then back to bed by 8/8:30 for bed. I'm glad that he is actually taking naps now. He didn't do that until about 6 months old. I thought that was really odd, but sleep is their way of coping with "growing pains" I think! His pediatrician isn't concerned with it =) Hope that helps.

@Lucy Edwards: That actually sounds like the perfect amount of sleep for a 10 month old. Mine also sleeps about that many hours a day. 15 hours is just right at this age! You are lucky that she seems to have such a great sleep routine. Many babies don't.

She may start dropping the morning nap sometime after her first birthday. My first dropped the morning nap around 15 months, but still napped 90-120 minutes in the afternoons.

wow thats crazy, our babies almost have the exact same schedule! Mine wakes up around 8 tho, 6:30 is waaaaay too early for me! :) He naps around 10:30, for about an hour, sometimes less, and if he wants to his 2nd nap is around 2 as well, with his big brother. but lately he doesnt want to take his afternoon naps, and instead of going to bed at 9-9:30, we feed him at 8:30 instead, or he naps for an hour or so before bed, gets his bottle and right back to bed he goes.. :) she'll let you know when she doesnt need her naps anymore, and by still taking 2, she says Im still growing! :)

My son still takes two naps during the day- the first is very short and is around noon. The second is around 5pm for 2 hours. He still sleeps through the night from 10p- 6a. They still need rest. I just let him nap and work around his schedule. As baby gets older their sleep patterns will adjust accordingly.

Sounds healthy to me. I think every baby is different, some need more sleep or less than others. My son sleeps about 8-8 and naps twice during the day at pretty much the same exact schedule as yours. His naps usually run 1-2 hours but sometimes the afternoon one is up to 3 hours. I figure his body knows how much sleep it needs and he'll wake up when he's ready.

This is completely normal. I promise that she will eventually grow out of the naps, but it is very important for young children to get lots of sleep. It aids in their development and growth. My 10 month old takes 2, 2 hour naps a day. She wakes up at 1:00 - 3:00 every morning, but that has nothing to do with her taking naps during the day. She's just a hyper baby! But there is nothing to worry about as far as letting her take naps during the day.

That is exactly right for a 10 month old. My 10 month old's nap times are pretty similar. At 10 months they should be able to go for about 3 hours of awake time before needing a nap. I remember my eldest son now 3 yrs only dropped his second nap close to 18 months. They are all different but I have found the best guid in a book called "Sleep Sense" by Ann Richardson and Megan Faure.

Lucy,
My son is 10 months old and he still gets up once per night... We put him down for bed at 9 and he is usually conked out by 9:30 10:00 pm and he wakes up about 1 am... THen he gets back up again for the day at 7 or 8 am.... then he is up for about an hour to two hours.... and is ready to nap... sleeps for an hour or two... wakes up and goes back to sleep after about an hour of playing.... He likes to sleep... I dont worry about him though... He will wake up in the mornings and lets mommy and daddy sleep... He just sits in his playpen and plays.

I have a 10 month old daughter. My oldest just turned 2. Each baby is different. I say Count your blessings! My first daughter would take like 3 to 4 naps a day, each only about 20 -30 minutes long. My 10 month old now takes 2 naps a day. One around 10am for 1 to 3 hours and one at 2pm for 1 to 3 hours. She goes to bed between 7:30 and 8pm and wakes up around 6:30am. Your daughter is not napping too much for a 10 month old. My oldest took 2 naps a day up till she was a year and a half. If your daughter is tired let her nap. Both of you will be happier!

My daughter sleeps 8pm-8am. Naps from 10am-12pm then naps again from 3pm-5pm. They will sleep as much as they need. The older they are the more active they are and need more sleep. As long as your not forcing the naps and she's still sleeping through the night then let baby sleep when shes sleepy!

My son was a very bad sleeper and I was finding it hard to cope so I put him on a sleep plan from 8 weeks. He is now 10 months and he sleeps 7pm to 7am, short half hour nap at 9.30am and from noon he has another 2 hours. Some days he has less and on days he does swimming he has more. Sounds perfectly fine but take note of when she starts waking earlier in the morning this will be the indication to shorten her naps.

That is about how lond my daughter sleeps. It's really up to them. I go by what she tells me. Sometimes, she'll take 2 naps or sometimes, she'll just take one big nap. When she was a bit younger should would do the 'awake 2 hours, sleep 2 hours' thing so she still kind of sticks to that so when she wakes up at 7:30am, she's ready to take a nap at 9:30, 10 am. If there really isn't anything going on, I let her go to sleep. If I'm out, she's ok with waiting. So, I'd just listen to your baby. She'll let you know when she's ready for just the one 2-hour nap a day thing. You're doin', good, mama! =)

So I know how u feel about not having to worry. my daughter sleeps more than yours by the sounds of it - she goes to bed at 7pm till 7am. then goes down again at 9.30am - 12noon then 2pm-3/3.30pm. I wouldnt stress, its just like you if your tired you sleep. You will also find if you have very busy days she will sleep more than days were you just relax at home.

Your little one is a lot like mine. She is 10 months old and goes to bed at 7 or 7:30 and wakes up anywhere between 6:30 and 8 am. She also sleeps through the night and has since she was two months old. When she is at home with us on the weekends she takes two to three naps, about on hour around nine, thirty minutes to an hour and a half around 1, and then a before bed nap at 4 pr 4:30 that we usually wake her from around 6 for dinner and to visit before bath and bed. If she is at daycare during the week she only sleeps once in the late morning for thirty minutes and then when she gets home for her 4 pm nap. My liitle girl loves to sleep and is such a happy baby for it. I don't think they get too much sleep they know what their bodies need and they are growing so it is good for them.

My son is 10 1/2 months he has slept through the night for quite a while, but he does wake up through the night a few nights during the week . He goes to bed at night 7.30 -8pm and wakes up around 7 -8am. He usually has 1 nap a day around 11.00am and sleeps for 1 -3 hours. If he needs it he will have a morning and afternoon nap usually around 10.30am for about 1 hour and then afternoon round 3pm for about 1-2 hours.
Don't worry going by the rest of the mums that have written comments, it seems alot of babies have similar nap habits around 10 months. All babies are different.

My daughter has a similar schedule! She sleeps at night from 8:00pm - to about 7:30/8 am. Then usually around 10 or 10:30 she gets fussy and starts rubbing her eyes. She'll nap around 1 1/2 - 2hrs. Then around 2:30/3 pm she is ready for another nap that lasts 1 1/2 -3hrs. I also wondered if she was sleeping too much, but then came to the conclusion that she wouldn't sleep if she wasn't tired. So, I wouldn't worry about it.

No this is perfect for a 10 month old according to the experts. I've heard that most babes don't drop down to one nap until between 12 and 16 months.

Our little one gets up at 7 am, goes down like clockwork for her first nap from 9:30 - 11, then has her second nap from 2:30 - 4. Then down for the night at 7. She's super happy and well rested!

Your baby sounds textbook.

Thanks for all the comments and info about your little ones sleep pattern and nap times. It's good to know that everyone has different bedtimes and naptimes and still have happy well rested babies. I am noticing my daughter's naps have been getting slightly shorter recenly, I am not sure whether this is due to her getting older and wanting to explore for longer, or that because the weather is getting warmer and the days are lighter for longer. But either way, she is still a happy healthy little girl, so I am going to stop worrying :-)

Marissa if your son wakes up in the middle of the night cause he is hungry or he thinks he is. If this is a problem and you want to try and stop the feeding in the middle of the night. try giving him a pacifier when he wakes up... We did that for our son and he doesn't wake up in the middle of the night to eat. and Do you give him a bottle right before he goes to bed? We do and he sleeps through out the night and wakes up after 5am to eat. Just a thought if it was a problem, or not...

My son is 10 months old. he goes to bed between 8:30-9pm well may be in bed but may fall asleep by 9:30pm sometimes... he sleeps through out the night. depending on if I need to leave early in the morning we are out the door by 5:45am and he sleeps in the car get to the babysitters by 7am thats when he would wake up again and may be ready for a nap between 10am-11am he could sleep for 20mins to sometimes I've been told 4hrs and he would always take a nap on the way home in the car which is about 45mins long... around 4:30-5pm...... He could have 2-3 naps a day and that's not including the car rides. The length of his naps very all the time.... but if I don't have to get up early in the am. he could wake up anywhere from 5am-8am for his first feeding and then we go from there... Sad to say but his day is not always the same so we adapt and make it through the day with little problems. We both adapt...
