Where do I start. My son was born on July 20th and the first few months were great (sleeping all night) when he was about 3 mos old he started getting the reflux really bad so I went to Dr and was advised to put oatmeal in every bottle(rice was to hard on his tummy)! I have done that and I leave him sit up-right for 30 min after eating, tried elevating the matress, none of that has worked. I have tried the whole prevacid thing which made him 10 times worse! Then we got Zantac now. It works for some things such like when he burbs and it comes back up, but every evening and at times through out the day all he does is cry and fuss. I don't think its colic cause this didn't start till he was older. This started getting really bad about 4 1/2 mos. I have tried everything! The past two nights he has woken up in his sleep about 6 times. Once I gave him is pacifier (I leave him in the bed I dont feed or pick up up)he goes back out. He is on baby food and I have went through that whole mess with the dr of what veggies to give... try one for a week and see how he adjust... etc. etc. ITS NOT WORKING! Next my Dr has advised me to see the GI doctor! This is where I really need some advise!!! Is it his stomach no reflux? Do I change formula? I don't think he would get an allergy to that after 3 mos of being on it? Is it normal for him to fuss this much? I am sorry to keep on babbling but please give me some feedback on what you would do with your child or if this is normal! Thanks :)

Thank you both for your responses! I think he is starting to teeth because he has been drooling for the pas 2 mos like crazy, that is the only sign so far but I feel his gums all the time there not red swollen and no white buds yet!! But he gets consitpated very easily. I have gotten that under control for the moment. The only foods I find that don't seem to be the prob are sqash, carrots, sweet potatoes and pears. Everything else I have tried causes a night of pure hell. The doctor said something about changing his formula he is on gentlease now and was on similac right when he was born. His gas is terrible. I have used mylicon (sp?) and infant gas x also tried the collic water. It might work as a temp problem but thats it. I think I will call the doctor again and see what this problem is. For so long I thought maybe it was just me and babies cry that much. But all others I know with kids seem to have these happy babies that cry on occasion. lol!! Thanks again ladies. :)

Hi Amber...I read your post and had to respond. My son (born July 28) was fine for the first 6 weeks, then started screaming all the time (sounding like he was in pain) and vommitting. He is now on Zantac - it works most of the time, but he does still have frequent spit-ups.

Before the Dr. diagnosed the reflux and started medication we had him checked out for Pyloric Stenosis...it's a stomach thing that can be easily diagnosed (with ultrasound) and corrected with minor surgery. Fortunately we didn't have to go that route. Is your son gaining weight still? Or has his weight gain stopped or is he losing weight? These are things that would lead to a diagnosis of Stenosis (I'm a peadiatric nurse as well as a Mom :))

Is your son only crying at night/bedtime? Maybe he's going through a growth spurt and is hungry? There is nothing wrong with feeding him a bottle at night - even if he is eating solids during the day...babies don't truly sleep through the night until they are closer to their 1st birthday.

Is he teething? That may explain the constant fussines...notice unusual amounts of drooling, chewing on anything and everything, rashy bumps on his cheeks or backside - all of these could indicate teeth coming in.

One thing you could try is Enfamil A+ Thickened formula...I use it for my guy and he doesn't spit up nearly as much...and you don't need to add the cereal to it 'cause it's already thick.

Remember, it never hurts to get a second opinion...a GI specialist might be able to give you a better idea of what's going on. And always trust your gut!! If you think something is really wrong then push, ask questions and stand up for your little guy 'cause he can't do it for himself!

Good luck hon...it's no fun right now, but it will get better. Speaking as one who has been struggling through it too...your not alone! :)

That's a tough one. I feel your pain! My son never even really cried for the first 3 months of his life and then he started teething and it all went out the window. Does it seem like he's in pain when he's fussy? Are his stools normal? My son would get really constipated by things that were fortified with iron (cereal, formula, etc). So I would get all the low iron ones. I don't exactly know what reflux is, but unless you're sure that's what it is it could be any number of things. Teething, gas, etc. I would try switching his formula to a low iron one, give him barley cereal and foods like sweet potatoes and pears and see if that does anything. If not, then go back to a pediatrician. Good luck!
