Is 3 months too young for rice cereal?

My son is 3 months old and is already starting to sit up on his own, scoot around on the floor, teething and babbling. 3 weeks ago he slept up to 7 hours a night. But recently he wakes up every 3 to 4 hours to eat. I gave him 1 tbs last night mixed with formula and he devoured it with no problems. I'm desperate for more sleep because I just started going back to school but I don't want to start him too soon if it will have adverse effects later on. I just don't know if 3 months is too young for rice cereal. What should I do?

i'm appalled at the responses here; giving a 6 week old rice? even some adults have trouble digesting grains, much less a six week old! are you serious? no wonder our children have such allergies and food intolerances...

3 months is too young for anything but breastmilk (or formula if you're feeding that).

3-4 hours is actually a really long time for a baby that age to be sleeping! I know it's exhausting (I have a 5 month old and a 3 year old) but it's part of parenting a baby to feed at night. If you are able to keep bub close at night, next to your bed (or with you in bed if you are breastfeeding and follow the safe co-sleeping guidelines) you can minmise disruption to your sleep.

The vast majority of babies aren't ready for anything other than breastmilk or formula until at least 6 months or older, and certainly not before 4-5 months. Their digestive systems are quite fragile and introducing solids before the baby indicates that s/he is ready can mess up the vital gut flora balance with negative health efects.

I have a 3 month old baby girl. I have been giving her Rice Cereal since she was a week old. Her formula just never seemed to fill her up..She has been doing amazing ever since...she was only 5 lbs 10 oz when she was born, now at 3 months old, shes a whopping 13 lbs almost! You do what you think is right! Only you know your baby...if hes tolerating it and doesnt have a problem, let him have the rice! Good luck!

I know that a lot of people will say not to feed solids until 4 months of age, but there is a caution to not do it until the 6th month for there is a possiblity that introducing it earlier would contribute to asthma. That is what I advise.

My mother in law insisted to start my 2 1/2 month old baby on rice cereal at night so he can sleep better and it back fired on us. My baby was constipated for 1 week :( and he suffered so much. I understand every baby is different but i had a gut feeling that my baby was not going to tolerate. For now on I will listen only to the pediatrician.

i think it depends on the individual child. I started my second at three mnths and it all worked out fine. I now have another three mnth old and she is drinking 8 - 10 onces every 3-4 hours easily and sometimes seems hungry shortly after. I however am holding out for another week or two but have no propblem starting her on rice cereal at this age. Go with your gut because there are so many different opinions bout this topic.

I gave rice cereal to all 3 my kids at 3 months they tell u not to introduce solids until 6 months. But alittle rice cereal a.k.a pablum never hurt. Your baby may even sleep better if he/she is getting up several times to feed. I wouldnt give anything with fruit but plain rice cereal would be fine

i started my llil one on rice cereal the end of last month..shes 3 1/2 months. she hasn't had any problems. before i tried the rice cereal she was drinking 6-8oz every 2-3 hours. the first night i tried it before bed and she slept worse than ever...now i feed her at 11AM and shes fine and sleeps great at night.. 6 hours then wakes up for a few mins (i move her from her crib to her swing) and then she sleeps another 5 hours. id say if your baby doesnt seem content with just the formula..or Breast milk then try him on some rice cereal and see how it goes :) good luck

I started Jackson this past Sat as well. I couldn't believe how he took to the spoon. He loved it. I started him before 4 months in hopes he would start to sleep throught the night he still wakes up twice to eat. The cereal helped him to sleep longer stretches but he is still waking up twice to eat I don't know what to do. My pediatrician said to wait till he was 4 months but with my 1st son the dr told me to put cereal in his bottle at 6 wks. I think it should be left up to how you think your child will handle it.

I have been giving my little on rice cereal mixed w/ BM or water for over a month. She's just now 4 months old. She takes it well, poop is good, and she sleeps all night. But I wasn't able to pump as much BM as she was requiring. So we introduced cereal. She has a bowl before each meal while I'm at work, it reduced her BM intake from 5-6 oz per feeding to 3 or so. We both get a great amount of sleep each night :)

I started my daughter on rice cearal after 8 weeks. She was drinking to much formula. I give her cereal 2 times a day. Once in the morning and once before bed. My doctor said not till 6 months, but my mom did it with us, and her mom did it with her. Start with a small amount. I make it thin and give it to her through a bottle. They make nipples for cereal so it doesn't get stuck. I don't think 3 months is too young for rice cereal as long as the baby is tolerating it.

Feel free to give him cereal! It can be given as early as 6 weeks depending on the babies development. Try mixing the cereal with about 20ml of water/formula/breastmilk in a cup/bowl. Add enough liquid so it can stay on a spoon and spoon feed it to him. Once he finishes what he wants to eat or starts getting fussing, feed him a bottle to top him off. Should buy you about 6-7 hours before he's hungry again!

My son was the same way and I was told to start putting a little(just a little) rice cereal in with his formula and he sleeps better, he doesn't spit up as much and he seems more content. I know there is lots of stuff out there that tells you 3 months is too young for rice cereal and not to give them cereal until 4-6 months, but when you are desperate you will try anything and mother knows best so go with your gut instinct.

I am no doctor, but my pediatrician was going to start my daughter on it sooner (like 1 month), but she was constipated so he thought it wasn't a good idea. He did say though that it would not have been a bad idea if she had not had the constipation problems because it really helps with the reflux. We also were told that once she gets things moving so to speak, we could try a little and see how she tolerates it. She is almost 4 months old (will be on November 8) and we started her on a small amount of cereal just last night. As long as she eats well and things seem to be tolerated, we were told she would be fine. Every baby is different so I would get advice from your own pediatrician on if 3 months is too young for rice cereal. Just a thought though, my own mother had put rice cereal in my bottles from the time I was 3 weeks old and I never had any problems and I wasn't a big baby.

They say to wait till the 4th month. That way their digest system can be more developed.

I started my daughter on rice cereal a little before 3 months and I only give ti to her once in the afternoon after her bottle around 2 or 3 and she seems fine on it. She had reflux and the doctor told me I could put rice cereal in her bottle to help which I did not I just started giving it to her with a spoon because I figured if it was ok in a bottle then it should be ok with a spoon and she sleeps all night about 7-8 hours.

I give Jory a little bit of rice cereal before bed. He sleeps at least 7 hours a night since I began this ritual. As long as it sits well with his little tummy im going to continue on :)

My son started n cereal at 2 months and I also asked his doctor and she said all babies are different but if your child is tolerating it than by all means continue :)

My son has been eating rice cereal since he was 6 weeks old and oatmeal since he was 8 weeks old. At 2 months he started fruit 2x a day. His pediatrician said that as long as he tolerated all that, this month he will be starting veggies. We don't mix the cereal with his formula at all. He was a big baby at birth and weighed 16 lbs at 2 months old. I guess it's all up to the pediatrician!

My doctor told me no cereal until my baby was at least 6 months old. However, your doctor might have a different recommendation. Good Luck! :)

Their bellys are still developing, so breastmilk or formula is best. Solids not until at least 6 months.

I would talk with your babys pediatrician. I am an RN and as a rule we tell moms that only formula or breastmilk should be given to a baby until they are four months old. They really dont have the ability to digest anything else until that point. In some instances, a pediatrician may ok starting cereal a little sooner but I think itg is always a good rule of thumb to consult with the doctor first.
