My 6 month old still isn't sitting up. Is that weird?

He stands better than he sits and he can't crawl. He has a lot of trouble sitting. He has to be leaning on something. Is that weird? Most babies I've seen have been sitting by this age.

Holy crap....I must have a late bloomer. He is just over 6 months and does not sit up on his own yet, hates tummy time so not even close to trying to crawl, has rolled over once (which I believe was a complete accident) - he does however know his alphabet and can count to 50, just kidding! I am not worried, he will do everything on his own time and the longer I can keep him in one spot the better. (my 3 year old keeps me running all day as it is) So don't fret, he will get there!

I have a 6 month old that isnt sitting up by herself but can sit for a few seconds then tumbles over. It will come. Ive did a lot of research and have read that some babies dont sit til 7 to 7 in half months old. But i have 2 autistic children so im keeping a close eye on her. Good luck!

Mine was born July 19th and when he just turned 6 months he couldn't either but out of the blue he has started. He still isn't perfect and will fall down sometimes but just wait, yours will surprise you and it isn't abnormal. My cousin's daughter didn't sit up until she was 7 months or so. Mine also can not crawl yet but he gets on his hands and knees and rocks back and forth quickly, it's funny to watch (except when he gets mad about not being able to move!) Have you tried a Bumbo seat? I think that helped him a lot.
~Chelsi~ My son can only scoot backward also!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this site and I'll tell you why...every time I'm worried about something I come across someone on this site with the same worry! Anyway, my LO is the same way. He'd much rather stand (with support of course) than sit. He's still leaning down with his hands down when he sits, and he's not crawling either. So I guess what I am trying to say is that I am RIGHT THERE WITH YOU! :-) I just try and spend a little bit of time each time encouraging sitting up and crawling, but I guess they will do it on their own "clock" :-) Good luck with your little one and I'll cross my fingers for your if you cross your fingers for mine!! :-)

My 6 month old sits but won't roll over either way. I talked to the doctor about this a few days ago and she said that some babies skip milestones and will come back to them later. Not to worry

Babies can learn to sit up between 6 and 8 months. If they havent started to sit up by 9 months then you should have a word with your health visitor.

[deleted account]

just put a blanket or something around him when you set him down so that if he falls over he doesnt get hurt. and dont worry about him crawling some babys never learn to crawl my one year old nephew didn't learn how to crawl until after he could pull himself up to stand on his own. I think he was 8 months.

It's much too early for a baby to sit up straight by themselves! My daughter is six and a half months old and she can't sit up straight or stand. She starts to crawl, but it'll take some time yet. As far as I know, most babies can sit up straight when they're eight months old. So there's sbsolutely no reason to worry. Be patient! Your baby knows what to do when his time has come.

Mine is almost 7 mos (was 4+weeks premature at birth) and is just starting to sit up well on his own, still leans though. He stands great, but no crawling either, just starting to move around on belly. Try your best not to compare to other babies....all are different, all do it on their own time. You'll go crazy! Just relax and enjoy each stage because before you know it, he'll be running around screaming "NOooooooO!" :)

I wouldn't worry about it right now. My little man would rather stand as well and hadn't been sitting up very well either until just recently. He still falls sideways but I've been sitting behind him and helping him a little each day and he has improved so much in a week! He is also just scooting and not crawling yet. I've heard that some babies never crawl, they just skip it and start walking. My neice didn't crawl at all and started walking at 9 months. I know it's instinct to worry that your child is behind because I do it to but I think he's doing just fine. I think you'll find that if you work with him just a little bit each day a week will make a huge difference.

My little guy is almost 7 months & he can't sit by himself either..He needs to put his hands infront of himself but he still falls over! I was getting really worried too!! He has strong legs because he'll stand & go up & down on his legs with us holding his hands! He can't crawl either..soon I think ~ he gets angry & gets up on his knees but I don't think his arms are strong enough!!!!! I hope he gets it soon!! My little guy has no teeth either!!!

My son is almost 7 months and still needs help to sit. He can balance for a few seconds but it's more a case of me sitting him in a way that he doesnt fall over rather than him actually sitting on his own. I know all babies develop at thier own pace but it is hard not to worry sometimes, especially when everyone elses baby seems to be so far ahead.
I'm sure they'll get there eventually though. :)

Well, i´d be worried that he stands?!?!?! a six-month old???? invcredible!! Crawling by babies is normal between 7 and 8 month so do not worry at all, some kids don´t crawl until 10 month and they still are alright. usually the kids which can´t sit well without a support are bigger than other kids their age. is that your case? Because usually bigger kids have problem with sitting but not so big problems with standing... My girll is six months just today and she still can´t sit by herself so well andf she is the littlest one of all kids i know her age... So, chill out:)

7 months in a week and we are just now getting to sit unsupported for 1-2 minutes at a time. Last week she would just fold right over! So even over just one week, you ma see a dramatic change. Help them sit supported by you a few times each day so they can gently start working on those muscles they need to support and balance themselves.

My baby is 6 months and can only sit up by himself for a minute or so, he either just looses his balance or wants to army crawl. But he can't crawl yet either. Every baby is different and reaches milestones at different ages.

My daughter turned 6 months on the 14th of Jan and she doesn't sit up by herself either. I was a bit worried, but after reading all of the previous comments, I am relieved. She does try to get up on all fours and can do the "ol' belly rocking', but can't quite make past that. I let her play with her toys in a Papasan Chair, it's perfect because it's so padded and if she tips over, she will keep playing and the next thing I know.....she's fast asleep, looking very very comfy!!

They do in their own time. My Megan sits up in a bean bag; we keep her protected in case she tips. :)

My daughter is 6 months and is starting to sit up on her own. She gets better at everyday but probably will take her a few more weeks until she sits up without falling over after a few seconds. She has not even tried to crawl yet but its still early for that so Im not worried.

I wouldnt worry about it. My son is 6 and a half months old and only today has he discovered how to sit independently. Until today, he would slope, slide and fall to the side and that was even when i used to try and sit him up surrounded with pillows/cushions.

my son is 6 mos and 2 weeks, he just started crawling the other day, but he still doesn't sit up. sometimes he'll go from on his hands and knees back to his butt, but i wouldn't really call that sitting. from what i hear, they do one or the other first. once they master one of them, they will be able to concentrate on figuring the other one out.

i was really worried that he would be behind because for the first 4 months of his life he didn't get much floor time. because we lived in a tiny apartment. but since we moved, he's picking it up pretty quickly. he only started rolling over 2 weeks ago, and he still has a hard time going from his stomach to his back.

My daughter will be 7 months in a week and a half and she isn't sitting by herself yet. I will sit her with the boppy around her and she will sit for a few minutes then topple over or just leans on one arm. Sometimes she'll fling herself back when she gets mad. She really does not like sitting and would much rather stand (in her activity center) It seems to help when I distract her with toys and such. I'm a little worried myself, especially now that she's almost 7 months, but if she's anything like me, it will take her longer to do things so I guess I just have to be patient :D

I have twin boys that were born premature so they told me they would be behind because they were 1 1/2 months early, but reading all these entries and seeing other babies that are the same age they seem right on track. My boys aren't able to sit up alone for long but they can for like a min. or so. Just keep trying to have your baby sit alone and they get used to it. Mine are trying to pull themselves to a sitting position but they just dont quite get it yet. Good luck

my son is 6 months and 2 weeks and he just started sitting up this week. He would constantly topple over and then one day he just didn't anymore. He still gets wobbly if he's tired so I always have a nursing pillow behind him but for the most part he's steady. Your son will do it when he's ready.

MY little guy started sitting up just perfectly just a week after he turned 6 months. The few days before he finally did it, I really didn't think he would do it for a while... like he couldn't even sit up with pillows around him. Then on night I tried to get him to sit up and he feel back and bumped his head and the next time Itried to get him to sit he was a pro! lol. You're baby is perfectly normal and he'll figure it out on his own time :) 6 months is still early for some babies to sit up. :)

My son sits only holding on to somthing. He looks like he is trying to get on his knees to crawl. My other 2 boys were the same. They walked at exactly 1 year. I am glad mine don't grow up fast because I love the baby age.
