I have been through all the cups going until I found one to suit my 9 month old she took to it straight away after months and expensive shopping trips... Tommee Tippee 'Tip it up' cup with advanced dura-spout and lip touch technology from 4 months+ I think this one might be new as I haven't seen it around before. With my eldest now 2 and half getting her into these things was a nightmare until I found that the nuby was the right one she is now drinking from normal plastic glasses now. You need to find the right one for your child if the child doesn't like it then it will just play with it and throw it around :)

My 8 1/2 month old daughter has been using a sippy cup for her water since she was 3 months old! She now also has her morning & afternoon milk in sippy cups, but her bedtime milk is still in a bottle.

Just keep trying Candace. He is going to get use to it and it will take lots of time. Just give and or place a sippy cup by him when he is on the floor playing or on his high chair eating and try offering it to him each time you thing he is tasty. My eight month old has been using a sippy cup all by herself since she was six months old and she is a pro at it now so proud of her. It took lots of determination and patience though

my 8 1/2 month old son is also getting used to holding his own "cup" i use the Nuby bottle with handles. sometimes he tilts is back to get the formula, but sometimes i have to keep showing him , but it has a relatively similar flow to the bottles he's used to. he hasnt gone for the Nuby sippy cup yet-- that flow is much heavier - im going to wait a little before i try again-

My daughter is 81/2 months and is strictly breastfed, unless I am at work. I started giving her the cup about 3 weeks ago. She just chews on it, but gets upset if you take it. I continue to give it to her with juice in it a few times a week. I figure at some point she will learn what to do with it.

I also have an 8 month old. She loves to hold her sippy cup and throw it around as well. I like the soft top sippy cups with the handles on both sides. I also have used a small/dixie sized cup to help her learn how to drink from a cup. She still occasionally chews on the soft top, and sometimes needs help tipping it back far enough to get the liquids out, but I know if we keep trying she will eventually get it.

We just started sending a sippy cup with Kaitlyn to daycare and gave it to her at home occasionally. Initially she mainly just played with it , threw it around, teethed on it, and eventually started to figure out how to get a drink from it. It just takes time.

my son drinks out of an open cup or water bottle better than he can with a sippy cup, but we keep practicing. the silicone sippy cups work best for us

yes i found an amazing soft nippled bottle by pampers that works perfectly cause my son refused to use to hard topped sippy cups...and how i got my son to use it was by putting it in front of him with his toys and he gradually started playing with it and putting it to his mouth and it seemed to work...

My baby didn't go for the open cup or the sippy cup (soft top) yet, I ended up taking some advice from a friend who told me that nuby (and a few other companies) sell a transition bottle with handles and a soft nipple, so they get used to holding it and tipping it up to get the fluid out. She still doesn't usually go for juice or water, but at least she is getting practice. I sent one to the babysitters too. Maybe in a couple of months I'll try the sippy cup again.

Try teaching him with an open cup first. Messy but teaches kids important oral-motor skills. Sippy cups use a different tongue-to-teeth motion and the speech pathologists I have worked with recommend against using them, especially early on as they are not good for hard palate formation, development of speech muscles, etc. I never used a sippy cup with my older son until he was about 18 months old and had mastered drinking out of an open cup and a plastic water bottle. My 8 month-old likes drinking water out of an open cup now. He got ahold of his older brother's sippy cup and had no idea how to use it.
