Weight of 9 month olds

I really need some mom's opinions here.... My daughter is 9 months old and weighs 17 lbs. She looks perfectly healthy, is active, smart, and developing wonderfully. However, I am being hounded by her doctor about her weight. Apparently, according to her graph, my daughter is not even within the "normal" 5-95 percentile. She's below the graph, but my kid eats a ton! She has an older sister who is 3, and she has always been small too. But they're both healthy and bright little girls. What do you moms think? Is 17lbs too small for a 9 month old?

Some bubs are smaller than others, and like others have said often those charts are for FF bubs (especially if your BFing)

My DS2 is 7 days off turning 10 months, and when I last weighed him fully clothed he weighed in at 12kg (about 26lbs), which puts him above the 97th percentile. Yes he looks big, but he doesn't look fat. Are you happy with her overall look?

I've just punched 17lb into a converter and had a look at my son's plunket book at the graph in his book for girls would put her between the 3rd and 15th percentiles, looking closer to the 15th

I don't think 17 lbs is too small. My daughter had a check-up a couple weeks before she turned 10 months old and weighed in at 14 lbs, 1 oz. According to the graph, she is off the chart: 0%. I'm not too worried though because her older brother has always been the same way and is a healthy, active, and intelligent 4 year-old.
I think society as a whole can be weight-obsessed and gets too wrapped up in graphs, numbers, and comparisons. I also think that what today's average child is alot bigger than the average child of ten years ago (with obesity on the rise, etc.). Who knows, you may also be hounded by her pediatrican if your daughter is too high on the chart in her pre-teen years!
As long as your daughter continues to grow (and doesn't lose weight) and is healthy and happy, then I think there should be no reason for concern. Every child grows and develops at their own unique, individual rate. Some may have a steady weight gain, while others may gain in spurts (only a 1/2 lb one month & then 1 1/2 lbs the next).
I would trust your instincts: If you think your daughter is fine, then most likely she is. :)

My daughter is 10 months old and 16lbs 9oz....she is healthy and a big eater. She wears 6 month old clothes, but other than her short stature she is hitting all her milestones.Although she just started walking and its hilarious because she is so tiny, she looks like she shouldn't be able to do that! Your baby is fine : )

Nah, my daughter was around 17lbs when she was nine months. In fact right now at 10months she's only around 17lbs and like 10oz. She burns off all the calories quicker than she can eat them. Her doctor said something about it too me and I pretty much told her doctor to deal with it. My daughter just as a high metabolism and I'm not force feeding my daughter more food when she's done eating.I think you're daughter will be just fine

Oh, and by the way, my first child was born at 50%, then was consistently 25% and then dropped to 5% around 9-10 months. I was freaking out and even had her thyroid tested. She was fine and made up the difference by 12 months. Turns out, her growth spurt came late. She's now 5, perfectly healthy, eats well and is 75-90%. And she's not big at all, you couldn't tell that she's in such a high percentage. The doctor says she's just dense. I laugh that I used to be so worried about her weighing so little.

don't worry. @ my son's 9 mo. check up he was 18 lbs. the PED. said it was totally fine...usual weight is "around" 20 lbs. however, you must remember: if your daughter is crawling, creeping, or walking, etc. all over the place like our Ethan is, then she's working off some of that normal weight gain. She's fine.

My daughter is currently 9 months old and weighs 23 pounds, at birth she was 8 lbs 10oz, so she was born slightly bigger than some babies. I wouldn't stress on what the doctor says to you, as long as you know your child is healthy, that is truly all that matters.

My daughter is 10 months old and only weighs 15 pounds. Don't let that Pedi scare or bully you! She's YOUR child NOT his/hers! You know your baby better than anyone else. Unless she's loosing weight I wouldn't worry about it. Besides there have to be kid's who aren't "normal" otherwise there wouldn't be those blips on the graph ;-)

My little boy is just like that! He's 10 1/2 months and is only 17 1/2lbs. He is healthy, happy and active. He's got nice looking rolls without being overweight. I have spend many hours worrying and crying over how the doctors talked to me. I think it all boils down to...forget the docs. They only know what a little computer tells them. Your baby is the exact size God wants her to be. As long as she is healthy and happy...that's all that matters. And think, you get to enjoy the tiny baby longer than others!

okay. Same situation here. My daughter just turned 10 months...she now weighs about 16 or 17lbs. She eats well and is proportionate. She is healthy. They did a blood test just to make sure everything is ok...and it is...my doctor is no longer concerned. She is just petite....and sooo CUTE!

My 9 months old weighs 16 pounds 10 ounces at check up. The doctor said that she is about 10th percentile. But, the doctor's not concerned it at all. She is on the smaller side, but she is growing on her own speed. My 6 year old was always below 30th percentile until she was about 3, and she grew rapidly..... She is now 75th percentile on weight and 80th percentile on height.

The important things to watch and to track are 1) whether he/she is displaying a consistent level of growth over time, 2) whether he/she has a relatively proportionate height to weight average, and 3) make sure they are eating as healthy as possible. Both my oldest boy and my youngest girl were only 18-20 lbs at their 9 mo. appointments, and my oldest boy is now 19 years old, 6'4 and 215 lbs. If your child's growth is consistent FOR THEM, and they're eating healthy, there is probably nothing to worry about.

My Daughter is going to be 10 months old in a couple days and I just took her to the doctor a couple days ago. She only weighed 14 pounds 15 ounces. She is very active and mentally growing very well and a little advanced but I am worried about her weight. She looks healthy but she seems tiny..She is short too. Only 25 1/4 inches..But it runs in the family being im only 5 feet. Her weight is slowely dropping but we will see how she does for the next couple months. I just need to start feeding her more calories to see if she will gain any weight or if it could be a medical problem. Your baby sounds fine to me...as long as she is gaining weight or at least staying at the same weight. Especially if she is active.

Tell your pediatrician to lay off. Her weight is fine. Is she breastfed? My daughter is 10 months old and she weighed 18 pounds at her 9 month checkup. She's in the 45th percentile for her weight, but her pediatrician isn't worried. Your daughter is probably below the pediatricians graph. If she eats just fine, then I wouldn't worry about it, just shrug if off when your pediatrician mentions it. Is your daughter eating baby food yet? If not, then I can understand why they might be worried a little bit.

I have a cousin who has always been small for his age, don't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry. As long as she is growing, even if it's not at the rate that your doc likes, it's ok. Especially if she doesn't seem to have digestive issues. That was the size my daughter was and she was in the 50%. Maybe they're charting the graph wrong...

Mine weight 17.8 at her 9 month and 17.12 @ 9.5 months. She used to be 95+ %tile and has slowed down a lot since her early months. At 17.12 we were told that's 39%tile for a 38 weeker and that she was perfectly fine. My mom, me and my oldest daughter are all very small as well. My baby also eats a ton and she even has rolls upon rolls..lol but yet she's considered so little. I wouldn't worry about it either like the others said so long as she's healthy and happy. If it bothers you though I'd get a 2nd opinion from another pedi just to see what they say. My son was 20+lbs by 6 months (and he was a month early)..so it's true when they say each baby grows differently : )

Below is a link to the height weight chart that your doctor should be using. From my interpretation is that at 17 lbs, your daughter is between the 10th and the 25th percentile. I don't see how the doctor is even saying she is below the 5th percentile. Take a look and see what you think.

My first daughter was small. I do not remember her actual weight. Her pediatrician at the time freaked out and sent her for ever test in the book. Everything came back normal. The conclusion is that she is just going to be small.

My second daughter was 16 lbs 14 ounces at her 9 month check up. She was low in the percentiles, but her doctor (different pediatrician) did not seem concerned. She is happy, active and bright litle girl. He said he considers that more important that the weight. Look at it this way, someone has to be on the low end of the percentile. 5% (1 out of 20) babies will be below the 5 percentile by definition. I would not sweat it.

My daughter hit 19 pounds at 6months, and now at 10.5 ahe is still 19 pounds. She is long and lean but like yours active and smart. I feel like she is a bit small but her brother was 26.5 pounds at 6 months and 28 at a year so I am used to a BIG baby. She is still the same size as many of her friends. I think that if you think she's fine then she probably is.

Hi! I've had the same exact thing, except his pedi actually sent us for a bunch of tests and chest x-rays to make sure there wasn't some underlying cause for why he wasn't gaining any faster. My son is 10 mos. old and just barely hit 17 lbs. He's also very active, social, and hitting all of his developmental milestones. Even after sending us for all the tests (we even had to see a pediatric cardiologist) that came back with great results, he classified him as failure to thrive and sent us to a nutritionist. She told me to increase his calories and give him 8 oz of pediaure/day and add 1 tsp of oil to every jar of baby food that he eats.

While I appreciate the pedi's thoroughness in examining my child, I do think he had me concerned needlessly!

PS. It is so reassuring to hear that other moms have babies similar in size at this age!

My daughter is now 10 months old this month, last month at her 9 month check up she weighed 16 pounds 11 ounces,What her doctor told me is that you dont want them to triple their birth weight before a year.Around a year if they ve tripled their birth weight, then they re in range for their size.I have 4 girls and all of mine were about 19/20 pounds around their first birthday and my lightest birth weight baby was 6 pds 9 ozs and heaviest was my last at 8 pounds:)

My 10 month old is 22 or so BUT he is a boy and eats non stop. My daughter was smaller and was stuck at 20 pounds for about 6 months. I personally do not think 17 pounds is too small as everyone grows at different speeds. Not all doctors go by the percentiles and graphs and mine does not, which I love. I would suggest finding a different dr. and not worrying about what is normal for everyone else, and find someone that will make sure your babies weight is normal for their growth pattern. good luck!

My daughter was 16lbs 2oz at her nine-month checkup. Your doctor may be referring to her weight-to-length ratio. My daughter's ratio has always been below the chart (around 0.3 percentile). But, her length is usually about 75th percentile and weight is around 20th. At six months, she was 95th percentile for length and 5th for weight!! Her doctor said that she is skinny for her age, but as long as she is eating, it's probably nothing to worry about.

My daughter was 17 lb 4 oz at her 9 month checkup and the dr said it was 25th percentile. I can't imagine that 4 ounces would make that much of a difference on the chart.

My Dr. also says that breast fed babies tend to front-load their weight during the first 6 months and then slow down their gain in the 2nd half of the first year. As long as she's eating, it shouldn't be a big worry.

I guess it really depends on how tall she is too. My sons a bit on the shorter side so he's always in 30th percentile for height and weight. At his 9 month weigh in he was 19.3 pounds. I think 17 lbs is of course on the smaller side but I don't think its too bad, especially if you say she's eating enough and is developing fine.

As long as she's healthy, I would not worry about it too much! My son is huge for his age (18.25lbs @6.5 months), but my friends little girl was only 18lbs at her 10 month check up and perfectly healthy. The "normal range" is just a tool to use, it's not 100% perfect nor does it fit every child. I have come across the same problem with the adult "weight - height ratio charts" I took care of a woman who was very curvy! Boy did I envy those curves! But she is 20lbs over the "avg doctor recommended weight" for her height and age. If she lost any more weight then she already has she would be unhealthy, like anorexic unhealthy. She just carry's a lot of extra weight in those curves. Go with your gut, or get another doctors opinion. If she was unhealthy skinny, you would be able to tell.
