I really need some mom's opinions here.... My daughter is 9 months old and weighs 17 lbs. She looks perfectly healthy, is active, smart, and developing wonderfully. However, I am being hounded by her doctor about her weight. Apparently, according to her graph, my daughter is not even within the "normal" 5-95 percentile. She's below the graph, but my kid eats a ton! She has an older sister who is 3, and she has always been small too. But they're both healthy and bright little girls. What do you moms think? Is 17lbs too small for a 9 month old?

At my daughters 9 month check-up, she was 17lbs 6.4oz and the doctor didn't seemed concerned at all. If your little one is eating well, seems healthy and happy, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I was more concerned about it than my doctor and he assured me that as long as she continues to thrive and stay healthy, I should just keep up whatever I am doing. My daughter has also always been small, growing within the 25th percentile, so if your doctor is saying she is not in the normal range, that doesn't seem right. My daughter also eats a ton, but I notice she poops quite a bit more than my friends babies, lol, so I think she just has a very high metabolism.

If your baby is healthy and happy, keep up the good work. Just don't worry about it!

My almost 10 month old daughter weighs 19 lbs. there is no way 17 lbs. isn't normal, they say my little girl is in the 50th precentile with her weight, so yours should be fine

My son is 10 months and also about 17lbs. the doctor says he is just fine. My four year old son was the exact same way as a baby and he is just fine. i wouldn't worry!

My daughter is 10 months old and she's almost 17 Lbs! I have had to let the weight thing go becasue it was driving me nuts. It's hard when everyone's first reaction to seeing your baby is "wow, she's really small". Our doctor checked her blood sugar levels just to make sure that there wasn't any other reason that she wasn't weighing more. There is a growth curve for a reason. Some babies are just smaller than others!
The best things come in small packages!
Good Luck

My daughter is 9 months old and weighs 16 lbs. I also have a niece that is 9 months old and weighs close to 18 lbs. My almost 3 year daughter barely weighs 30 lbs. Don't worry. Its just a matter of their metabolism.

My daughter is 10 months old and we had her 9 month check up was 2 weeks ago she weighed 16lbs 10ozs. I was so worried and stressed out and worried about her size but the doctor (who has the reputation of being one of the best pediatricians in our area, the only reason I'm mentioning that is because I totally trust her and maybe what she said will put your mind at ease) said that she is small but not too small. She also said not to worry about the percentiles because there are so many toddlers and even babies that are overweight that it effects the averages. I also breastfeed my daughter and formula fed babies tend to weigh more so shes being compared to them too. Shes meeting all of her other milestones and is happy and energetic and has good tone. It sounds like your little one is doing well also. I would say don't stress out about it, You may even want to check and see what another doctor has to say. There nay be another reason compounding with the weight that she is concerned about (does she have asthma or allergies, has she been sick alot?). A second opinion would be worth it just to put your mind at ease, but it sounds like she's doing just fine.

At the last 9mo well check my son was 19lbs with a full diaper (the nurse didn't want to take it off cause he was still going). The Doc didn't seem concerned. She actually said he was growing well according to his curve. She did say he didn't look that big because he was muscular because he is so active.

My daughter was 17 pounds 5 ounces at her 9 month check up. Her doctor did point out that she was on the small end compared to her peers, but he also said that she is perfectly healthy. It's not too small, it's just smaller than others.

I have twin girls and we just had our 9 month checkup. One is 18lbs 12.5 oz and in the 50th percentile and the other is 16lbs 12.5 oz and in the 25th percentile. Both of which my doctor considers "normal". As long as your child is happy, healthy and thriving I don't think you have anything to worry about.

my daughter will be 10 months on the 24th, and she weighs 21lbs 15oz.

i find these percentiles very interesting when i take her to the doctor, but also think they cause a lot of unnecessary concern. nobody knows their child better than mommy--i'm sure your baby is just fine. a happy, healthy 9 month old. :)

My 10 month old weighs 26 lbs.,..he is huge! His brother who is 4 weighs only 33 lbs, he is so tiny, but really tall. My niece is 2 and weighs less than my 10 month old! very child develops at their own pace and they all have their own body type. No two are the same! If she is healthy, eating like she should be and not getting sick or anything i would't worry to much!

At her 9-month appointment, my daughter was 17 lbs. 4 oz. Her doctor said she was in the 25th percentile for weight and she was perfectly healthy. She's just a small baby- enjoy her!

My daughter was about 18lbs at her 9 month appointment. She has been dropping in percentile but our doc said that is fine as long as the general trend is upwards and she seems healthy and happy. If baby is lethargic or super cranky then worry about if they are getting enough to eat or if something else is wrong. Otherwise enjoy your baby. If you are really worried you can always go to another doctor and get a second opinion. If you can it might make you feel a lot better.

I just used babycenter's weight calculator and your daughter is between the 10th and 25th percentile:

I think she is perfectly normal! Your doc should be concerned if she consistently looses weight.

She sounds fine to me (as far as one can tell over the internet). The graphs are outdated and stupid anyway. As long as she isn't losing weight all the other things you mentioned sound healthy enough! Some babies are just small.

I don't think so, my 9 month old son is 22lbs and he is in the 75th percentile. I wouldn't worry about it too much. My 6 year old son weighs on 42lbs
