Kids learn at their own pace. Don't worry if your child only says a few word, or even none at all. It might be do to the fact that your kid is shy or they feel no need to talk. If you are the type of parent that knows exactly what your kid wants and acts on that immediately, the kid might feel no need to speak to communicate. Some kids don't talk till they're 3. This doesn't determine the intelligence of that child. Keep pointing at things and say its name and repeat. They will get the hang of it. Props to all those wonderful moms out there. I am confident that this generation of kids will be even better than the last. We need great leaders, and kind and creative people to one day take over.

My 11 month old doesn't really have any distinctive words yet, lots of babbling still. Sometimes we hear mama, dada, ana (big sister), and uh-oh, but I think they are just noises to her. She can sign "milk" and "more" though.

wow am also surprised with some of the babies here. my daughter almost 11 months and only says mama. but she understands when i tell her no, come here, lets go, give me, she also waves goodbye and gives hi5 and maybe a little more. she is doing better compared to many babies of her age that i see so am not worried.

Phew! Reading all the responses and seeing that other babies can't say many words has made me feel better about my DD. She says mamamamamama, bababaabababa and babbles a few other things. Not much more.

bap (which may be "Bubs", his nickname)
neh (no)
can't think of any others off the top of my head. He's too busy working on walking and sprouting teeth as fast as he can.

Girls tend to talk earlier than boys. Boys are walkers from the get go. Boys tend to concentrate on the physical part of their developement. So it's only normal for boys to be a BIT behind on the talking part. As long as either are babbling it's a good sign. Be worried if either aren't saying anything at all.

But, of course, he understands much much more than just the words he can speak. He also does a lot of babbling. It sounds like he is carrying on a conversation in a foreign baby language.

dada

uh oh
mmmm (also while eating)
cat

He shakes his head no but doesn't say it, and he loves to click his tongue. He spends way more time crawling around, climbing on things, and walking and even running around in his spinny chair thing than trying to talk. :)

My 10-1/2 month old is just babbling. No real words yet. But, lots of babbles and yells. Oh, and "nyah" meaning "no." His older brother didn't talk until 2-1/2, his father until 3 and his grandma until 4. So, we have late talkers in this family. My older son caught up quickly though, after a few speech classes. So, I'm not really worried. It is really early for kids to be talking at this age.

Daddy
doggy
kitty-cat
there he/she/it is!
hi
Mama
Baby
tree

she might be attempting brother and her brother's names (Isaiah and Trevor)...but I'm not sure on that one yet. She also does the signs for baby, doggy and more.
