When did your baby start walking? Also, how much are they talking?

My son is 14 months old on the 15th of September and he is not yet walking. He really doesn't seem to have any interest in walking whatsoever. He is crawling very fast though. He is also talking a tiny bit but I am worried that it isn't enough. He says mama, daddy, and dog. I am concerned that he is behind in his development. I would love to hear about your kids and where they are developmentally. Please take the time to tell me your stories. Thanks!

All kids are different. As long as he is pulling up on things everything is fine. I wouldn't worry. He will do it when he is ready. My Daughter turned 14 months on the 1st still isn't walking. She talks alot though. She talks as much or more than my friends daughter who is 18 months old. I was told by a nurse who heard from her ped that kids can't develope two parts of their brains at once. They either work on talking or walking first- but not both together. If you are worried you can always ask your ped to check him out. I think both our babies will walk when they are ready. I know for my daughter it is a confidence issue.

My boy is 14 months on 9/16 as well and took his first steps the week before his first birthday. He is all over the place now and starting break into a run. He says mama and dadda and please (pwease) and mostly babbles. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. They all develop at their own rate. Once they start walking, it's a whole new world of chasing him though. Enjoy the crawling and cruising while it lasts...

My daughter is 14 months old and she started to walk when she was ard 10 months. However, it all depends on the weight of your child cuz if the child is heavier, then he will take longer than a lighter weight child. But overall, i think a child walks when he or she wants to or feels the need to walk! You can also massage his legs with baby oil cuz it helps in making them stronger.

My son was 14 months the 11th of Sept. He has just started, last week, walking with his walking toys. Before that he showed no interest. He is still not walking on his own. My doctor said to not worry until 16 months. He can crawl REALLY fast so he has no desire to walk. My friend's son did the same thing and he didn't walk until 15 and a half months old.

Hi My son who will turn 14 months on Sept 15th is not walking yet. He would cruise himself by holding furnitures, curtains...sometimes even hold my dress and walk along with me. He took some individual steps few weeks back but when i encourage him to walk he would just flop down...I was also getting to worry as one of the neonatal doc here mentioned that there might be some calcium/vitamin deficiency which can be cured through some medicines..however i do not want to think on those lines...Every child is different and we must learn to respect the same....he talks a lot...certainly more than 7 - 8 words....and then he can explain all his needs to me....i just hope he starts walking soon

Cheers

my daughter is the same age, she starting walking four and half months ago. but doesnt really talk. first, how much does your son weigh? if he weighs alot, it's harder to start walkikng cause of extra wieght. and do you work alot, if your not giving him enough time in the floor, that could be why. but some are just late bloomers. i'm worried that my daughter is talking enough. she has said mama and dada, and hi, no, and moo when i ask her what a cow says, but hi and yes, she wont say them often. it all depends on the baby! and my daughter wont drink a sippy cup, so dont worry about, trust me you dont want him walking! lol! he will be a pain in the butt, my daughter now climbs to the top of the couch and chair. good luck! and kudoos for being a mom, it is one hard job! :)

My son is 14 months old and started walking at 11 1/2 months. There is no need to worry as they all develop at their own pace. I have toddlers in my moms group that didn't start walking until 18 months so don't get too concerned. He will do it when he's ready and when he does make sure to make a big deal out of it and have the camera ready......

My son is almost 14 months old now. It was just two weeks after his 1st birthday that he took off on me. I didn't really feel like he had an interest in walking either because he was so great at crawling but one day he just stood up and took off so don't get too worried. All children are different and develop at a different pace. I'm sure you're son is fine. My friends daughter didn't start walking till she was 15 months and she's doing just fine.

Hi. My little girl, Anna, was 14 months on the 16th September and she's 'cruising' along furniture etc. When we put her in her campcot she pushes against the side and stands without hands for a few seconds, then falls. So, not yet walking! She has said mama and papa in the past but right now everything is 'baba'. I'm not particularly concerned because she has other ways of expressing her intelligence and I know she is absorbing what's going on around her and she understands a lot of what I say. Don't worry, they all level out... and who knows, perhaps your son's 1st sentence will be a multi-syllabic work of genius, and he'll be doing tri-athlons by the age of 5 :).

if your doc isnt worried, i wouldnt be....just keep working at it, he will get there!!!!

Every child is different. Your baby is probably just fine. My daughter, the age of your son, started walking just after her one-year birthday. However, her older brother, my son, didn't walk until 16 months. They have different personalities and that is what I attribute the difference to. My son was an extremely calm, content baby and just didn't seems to have the desire to walk early. My daughter is very busy and curious and wants to keep up with her older brother. And as far as his speech I wouldn't worry about that either. Like I said, all kids are different. My daughter is about at the same point as your son, says just a few words, but not many.

My daughter who is 2 didnt start walking until she was 15 or 16 months. My son will be 14 months on the 21st and he isnt walking either. I think its more when they get ready to do it they will. I know my daughter didnt want to start walking but the first day I caught her standing up by herself without holding onto anything it wasnt much longer that she started walking. Just give him some time. When he starts walking you will be wishing that he wasnt lol.

I have 4 kids, the eldest is 7, my youngest will be 14 months on the 21st of September. All children develop differently - it depends on the child and their environment i.e. whether they have elder siblings, or whether they are encouraged to do things for themselves or are pandered too alot by their parents/siblings. Children who walk later often have better developed spatial skills and depth perception so can navigate better around objects and have less collisions. If your child gets to 18 months and is not even walking around furniture yet - then be concerned. Speech development also depends a lot on the environment. Children with older siblings often talk sooner as they have to keep up, on the other hand sometimes they talk later as their elder siblings do all the talking for them.

Don't worry...my son is 14 months old and still not walking. Everyone else's baby is walking, but I'm not worried about him being 'behind' because they'll learn at their own pace. Just because your son and my son isn't walking like all their same-age friends doesn't mean they are going to be slow at everything in life. Every child is different and will learn at their own speed :) The same goes for talking ;)

[deleted account]

My son was walking with support by 9-10 months and with the furniture soon after. He took his firsts steps just a few days after his first birthday on July 12th......now he is attempting the running :) From what I have heard from some friends, their kids didn't start walking until they were almost 16mths....that is when your doctor will probably be concerned.

My son was 14 months old yesterday, and also has not begun walking. He can stand up, but is too scared to let go of what he's holding on to. He crawls well and babbles to himself, says a couple words. I get worried sometimes, too, but so many moms have told me not to worry--their kids walked late, too. I think we all worry that our kids may be a little behind, but as soon as you know it, they'll be walking, talking, running and you'll be chasing!

I dont think you should worry Sylvia. Boy usually reach these milestones a bit after the girls do, especially if they are first borns. It WILL happen though so don't get worried. My girlfriend's son just started walking almost from one day to the next, he was only crawling, then just like that he took and few tentative steps, then just took off. He's just fine. Good luck to you both!!

My son will also be 14 months on Sept 25th and is still not walking. He has started walking if you hold one of his hands. He's also started standing up in the room with nothing to hold on but he started that this weekend. My son has had chronic ear infection and gets tubes on Wed so I am hoping that will help his balance and he'll take off after that. Has your little one had ear infections? It can delay walking and speech?!

Have you brought this fact to your pediatrician's attention? I've always heard not to worry if they're not walking yet if they're younger than 14 months, and that if they start after that, it could be a problem.

My son started walking when he was 9 months old, and it took 2 weeks for him to start doing it regularly. I know that's ridiculously early, and I honestly wish I had a little more time before he had become so mobile!

Don't feel bad if you read about people's children walking earlier, just make sure that you find out how late is late enough to worry about anything.

Talking can take a lot longer, so it shouldn't be a problem yet, but if you're concerned, also ask your Dr.

my daughter turned 14 months on Sept. 11th. and she has NO interest in walking. It seems like she doen't have the leg strength yet or the balance. I am a little worried but plan to talk to her doctor at her 15 month appointment. She was also a late crawler/roller etc. Honestly I don't think she will be walking until close to 18 or 19 months. She has a ways to go. Around talking she says, da da, mama, duckie, lilah (the dog), thankyou, and a few other things. I'm not worried about her verbal abilities, it's just the walking...

As for talking he says ba ba, bye, da da, baby, and he sometimes says long sentences like I got to get it or i don't want it. but he says it so fast and we catch the end. He says no and no what it means now if he stops doing wat he is getting in trouble for it would all work out. lol.
Babies do things in their own time. My son doesn't say mama either but his physical therapist says that it's because I stay at home with him and his dad and I are on the same to him, but when I get a job it will change. IDK. I don't think ur baby is behind though

My son has the same birthday. He isn't interested in walking by himself yet either. He cruises around all the furniture by himself great but if you try to take his hands to get him to walk he just flops down. I know I've felt discouraged by this fact, but have looked into it and it is normal up until about 18 months for them to start walking. I hope I don't have to wait that long, but it's nice to know we're still in the right range. My son says mama, dada, and tickle. Every once in awhile he will repeat other words we say. I have also looked into this and have read that at 14 months, children usually know 3 to 5 words. I also know from my studies in early childhood ed that boys tend to develop language skills later than girls. It sounds like both our boys are on track, so no need to worry!

Hi - I have twin boys July born, so the first born started walking at 13mths old, two weeks before the second born. The second born however, does sign language and mimicks words more then his brother who just loves to "watch" and babble. Yes all are different. My twins are also fraternal not identical in so many ways :). Your son will walk when he's ready. I did tend to hold their hands to "encourage" them to walk coz I read somewhere that its a confidence thing - dunno - presume you've tried that :)

Don't worry! (though I know that is hard to do!) Most likely, you child is 100% normal and developing at his own pace. Our dr. even said crawling longer improves hand/eye coordination. My son (who was born 11 days late 7/9/09) started taking steps ~11 1/2 mo. and full blown walking a little after his first b-day. He's saying similar words, too- mommy, daddy, dog, Charlie (our dog), boo (as in peek-a-boo) and we sign with him, too. I have friends, though whose children didn't start walking until 15-18 mo. and their toddlers are 100% keeping up with other children now. Don't rush it and encourage them.

Hi :) my little girl is 14mths on 30th sep and she began walking when she was 13mths. she began by walking around the furniture then became a little more adventurous and went from 1 piece of furniture to the next...taking little steps sideways. for her birthday we got some push along toys and a bike for her to ride on or push and this seemed to help get her moving a little. she has also been standing on her legs alot since 5mths...she has a bouncy chair that she sits in to eat all her meals and i feel that having her upright strenthened her legs. but please don't worry about your little one, he will walk when confident enough. all i can suggest ( from my years as a childcarer) is to create opportunities for him to reach up to grab things, to pull himself up, create games for him to move around and grasp both his hands and walk with him :) i hope this helps xxx
