Has anyone dealt with this? My doc said it could be allergies & now it's just a chronic issue she may have to get over. UGH! Drives my husband insane since the noise isn't exactly pleasant. Her preschool teacher even mentioned it. Doctor gave her an expecterant but that really hasn't done much. I know it's post nasal drip & would love to try something natural to dry it out. Over the counter meds just don't work & really aren't intended for 3yr olds. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi there. I've had a similar problem with my daughter. She ended up having a couch since she was born and would come and go. When she would cough it would be weeks at a time. The doctor put her on 2 different kind of inhailers to help with opening the airways and the other had steriods in it to stop the uncontrolable urge to cough. Well That went on for 3 1/2 years before she ended up getting that cough for 8 weeks straight and 3 different doctors and telling me nothings wrong. So I was able to get into my family doctor and got her checked and he said that there wasn't anything wrong but I told him 8 weeks of no sleep at all was taking a toll and that there must of been something wrong. He referred her to an ear, throat and nose specialist and she decided that taking out her adnoids and tonsils would help and could eliminate the cough all together. My husband and I were a bit nervous about it and when I took her in and they took her down the hall for her surgery I thought I made the biggest mistake of my life but 15 mins later the doctor came and told me it was the best decision that I have ever made due to the fact that all the mucas was building up behind the adnoids and was staying there and making her cough. IT was a long recovery about 2-3 weeks and even longer getting her back eating all her normal foods once again. She lost about 4-5 ponds but since gained it all back. She had this surgery April 22, 2008 and "knock on wood" has not had a cold, cough or anything for that matter since that date. She has not been sick at all and has not been on her inhailers since then as well.

Good luck and hope you can find a solution

It is simple and not a fix but I read that you can add a little vinegar to your humifier water to help the lungs accept the water better. It also cleans out your machine. We have been doing it here, I didn't even notice a smell, and it seemed to help with his cough from a cold.

Dear Heather,

I feel your pain! My 5 year old has indoor allergies and my 3 year old has outdoor allergies. All year around, someone is "barking" around the house. One doctor told me to use a humidifier, while another one told me to use a vaporizer. I've tried benedryl, zrytec, claritin, nasonex and veramist. Everything only works temporarily (and it has to be administered everyday)!

Recently, after yet another sinus infection, the nurse in the doctor's office told me on the sly, that I should try Sinupret. She said it was an over the counter, homeopathic, sinus medication especially for kids (2 and over).

I would be lying if I said I tried it! It costs $15.99 for a small 6 oz. bottle and the recommendations say to administer it every 3-4 hours daily. I couldn't bring myself to buy it. My fear is that the bottle will be empty at the end of the week and my children will still be coughing! Not to mention that I'm tired of puting so much medication in my kids everyday.
