Anxiety over lost things

My son just turned 4 years. Over the last few weeks he will burst into tears if he thinks he has lost a toy and will not stop crying until it is found. When it is found it seems like a huge relief or weight has been lifted from him. (Many times the object is a small toy or something, in my opinion, of little value.) It is almost as if he is having an anxiety attack. Typically the toy is right where he left it 5-10 mins ago. He will even obese over a toy that was left at home while on a trip to the store.

Any suggestions on how to stop or respond to this behavior?

I think just talking to him at a time that he not crying or worry about the toy. Try to talk about appropriate behaviors and responses over lost toys. It will probably take time and lots of repetition to get him to respond appropriately. It may go away as he gets older too.
