How to stop sucking on blanket

My son has had his security blanket for almost his entire 4 years. He has a very bad habit of stuffing it in his mouth and sucking on it for comfort. He also likes to play with the silk with his fingers and toes:). Problem is from him sucking on the blanket, it has caused an overbite (which is genetic to start with). The dentist said I need to get him to stop. I've tried talking to him about not chewing on it and that it's going to hurt his teeth and that it's ok if he wants to play with it but to try and keep it out of his mouth. I know this is a huge comfort for him. How do I get him to stop without taking away his comfort?
