Peanut Butter

My ped said 3, however, since neither my husband nor I have any nut allergies I wasn't too concerned until my eldest happened to get a taste at 18 months and started swelling and getting hives.  Funny thing is, she has eaten pb since then and hasn't had any reaction at all (except for she doesn't like the taste or texture).  So just be cautious.

my son has been eating peanut butter since hes been 1. he also has no allergies. He dosent choke or nothing.i guess some moms put globs of it on sandwitches.hes tired of peanut butter and jelly,so i have to do grilled cheese now.lol

As everyone is saying it is different. I thought it was two and my girls' doctor said they should have waited until 3. However, once they had it, they would not give it up! With my boys I am trying to hold them off until at least 2 years old...especially since one of my sons does have sensitive skin and likely has allergies, although I have not made it a priority to have him tested until he is a little older! It has been hard to keep them away from nuts and peanut butter with 2 older sisters!

I waited till my eldest was three before I gave him peanut butter. My youngest 19months has licked a bit off my finger but thats as much as I would give her. she has had other types of nuts in cakes etc but not peanuts.

My son has had a tough start, Pyloric stenosis surgery at 1 month, tubes in at 9 months, Eczema, allergies, etc... So, I am going to wait until he is 3 years old. I agree with the other mom's to go ahead and try it if you have no history of allergies.

I've heard that you should wait until 3.  I was also wanting to figure out how to detect an allergy with peanut butter before giving my son Charlie some.

I don't know how true this is, but I was told to put a little on the cheek, even if it comes off, there will be enough there to detect.  If after a little while (I'm not sure how long) there is no signs of redness or anything, then try a little on the lips, same thing.

If nothing, then they should be fine.

Our pediatrician said 3 for peanuts too...we do have a history of (mild) food (not nut) allergies in the family.

While I was pregnant with my son, I ate peanut butter all the time. Then while I was breastfeeding for the whole first year, I ate peanut butter all the time. There's studies out there that say you shouldn't give your child peanut butter until they are old enough to tell you if they are having a reaction. There's also studies (more recently) that say that keeping peanut butter away from your child too long can actually cause a peanut butter allergy. We have no peanut allergies in either family, and since he technically got it from conception, I gave him his first serving at around 10 months. He did just fine.

I had heard a year.  My son goes to a lienced home daycare and my daycare worker told me that they are told are not allowed to give children under 3 anything with peanut butter or any nut products, even with parent consent.

no one told me anything, but i found my son loves toast with peanut butter for breakfast so it doesnt hurt to give it a try and see what happens

We started giving my daughter peanut butter at 10 months. We/ve never had a problem and let me tell you she loves her peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!!!

i was told anytime after a year , as long as your child hsa not allergies , and there is no family history of allergies, we just tried peanut butter and Lyric did fine with it .

I have been told to wait until your child is 3. Doctors are saying this because if you eat too many nuts when you are small you have a greater risk of developing allergies to peanuts and allergies are so severe now a days that even the smallest reaction when they are young can really hurt them. My daughter is 18 months old and she has has a few bites of peanut butter ice cream but I don't give her any more than that. We know she is not allergic but we don't want her to become allergic either.

Ugh, I wish there was just one set of guidelines.  I read elsewhere that Chick-fil-A cooks their stuff in peanut oil and he's had that a few times and nothing's happened.  Not to mention he had a peanut butter cracker at day care once.  I still might wait.  We shall see.  Any other thoughts?

I started giving my daughter Peanut butter from a year old. I think if there is a risk of allergies to nuts in the family it is better to wait but if no allergies then go ahead.

my ped told us 3 years! for any nuts,especially if either one of you have any food allergies, asthmas or Eczema. good luck!
