I'm looking to buy my son a training toilet and there are a lot of choices! I was wondering if anyone has started yet, and which toilet you are going to buy- simple, or one with all of the bells and whistles? Thanks!

I never bought a seat because I didn't want my son or daughter to be stuck on the "this isn't- seat, I won't go unless it's-" like some of my friends kids did. I was able to sit them on the toilet, and hold them while they went, and wipe when it was time without them falling in. Now it doesn't matter where they are they will go with no fuss. It seemed like any money went on a potty could go for shoes of clothes- necessities.
Good luck!

I've also been told that girls usually begin potty training at age two and that boys are usually closer to three years old so their is quite a difference. Also, if they can't tell you they feel wet then their not ready.

My experience comes from working in a daycare when I was 20 yrs old. I am now 29 and have my own soon-to-be two year old. Some days he likes the potty, others he doesn't and he still can't recognize when he's wet so until that happens, "He's not read." I've seen people buy the cute potty chairs and most of the time they are a mess and become a pretend toy. Maybe that works for some but I purchased a toilet ring by baby Bjorn and it's wonderful. I first tried a big bird toilet and it slid all over the place. The Bjorn was more expensive but it adjusts to every toilet so it is very secure, won't slide, and pulls off easy. I think these kind of seats are more realistic and children seem quicker to use the regular, "flushable," toilet.

I have one that I used with my older daughter (she's 9 1/2), who refused the regular toilet. My youngest only recently started using the lil potty, and she's been using the potty on and off for about 6 months now. Anyways, it's Safety First Potty ‘N Step Stool. It can be used on its own or you can take the seat off and use it on the toilet. We don't take it apart though, she prefers the cushy potty seat for the toilet tho.

There is a boy's potty training thing called a "Peter Potty" (you can look it up on babiesrus.com) My son is 23 months and has really taken to using it. It is a urinal so you don't have to retrain him later that he is supposed to stand up to pee. We do have a potty seat that fits on our toilet as well for when he needs to poop. One thing that has really helped is that every time he uses either one, we give him a treat. Usually just an M&M or some other little piece of chocolate. To get the process started, I talked with him during every diaper change and told him that he has gone potty/PU in his diaper and that if he wanted to do it like a big boy in the big potty, he needed to tell me when he needed to go. At first he was just running to me and telling me that he had gone in his diaper. But now, he recognizes that feeling before it happens and we are able to make it to the bathroom most of the time.

something else i've done is made a sticker poster to track his progress... its his "Parkers Potty Poster" every time he goes we sing and dance to the fridge where the poster hangs and he gets to stick a sticker... he loves it!!!

i bought my son just a plain one that will also transition to the big potty. it has a seat the you remove and put on the real potty. i didn't buy one with all the music and sounds from a warning from a good friend who said it really complicated the process with her two... she said they just thought it was a toy and they wanted to play with it and started peeing everywhere else thinking it was a game... they even got in her cabinets and peed in all her pots and pans!!!

I haven't seen the Elmo one yet!  Where did you see it?  My son loves ELMO  also, so that might be perfect.
