Fussy eating

Ever since weaning my son at 5 months he has had a fab appertite and until recently enjoyed his 2 lots of homemade solids a day in between his bottles.

About 2 weeks ago he started being really fussy and fighting me every time I tried to feed him. I had to distract him with what ever I had at hand (fruit from the bowl and spoons) so I can shovel it in. He does get some finger foods now which he likes but messes when I try to feed him.

I've read that babies can do this when they want more independence at meal times but he's not ready to completely feed himself.

I'm trying to get him to eat slightly lumpier purees but he wont eat them but will eat sultanas and rice cakes which are obviously chunkier than his purees!

He also keeps trying to teethe but no teeth as yet just the odd attack where he goes of solids completely and just wants milk.

Anyone else going/gone through this faddy stage? I don't want to spend time making him homemade food for him to not eat it. I've tried making them smoother again to no avail. I still have to fight them down.

Any advice welcome!

Hi,

I had a great eater until about a month ago. Meal times can be a real struggle and she will start to scream as soon as I sit down wiht her bowl at the high chair. Sometimes once i get a spoonful in she will be ok. She will also be more entusiastic if the food is orange (pumpkin & carrots) or fruit. It is very annoying and I waste so much homemade vegies. I find she will eat toast and sandwiches which I guess is her independence but she wont eat fruit or vegies as finger food and cant feed herself with a spoon yet.

Hang in there. At the moment I just give her what she wants even if i think she isnt getting much (have introduced finger food aftternoon tea which helps)

my daughter simply never ate anything pureed. she refused. i started when she was roughly 6 mths okld and she would let everything come oozing out at mealtimes. i persevered but didn't worry as i could see she was fit and well.

i gave her cucumber sticks and other half-cooked sticks of veggies as well as dried fruits. she gradually (ver gradually) ate more and more. now she eats anything - apart from purees. she can go off her food for a couple of days if she has a cold but i know she'll be back to 'normal' soon.

therefore i would give your baby a little cooked broccoli, carrot sticks (one at a time), dried apricots etc.

Same situation with my son.  I feel that he just wants what I have, but without teeth I'm nervous to give him too much.  You're definitly not alone!

My daughter has been fighting me at mealtimes...I've discovered it's because she wants some independence!  What we do now is give some finger foods for her to feed herself at the start and then work in the junior & strained mommy-fed meal.  Works a lot of the time.  I am a big believer in not forcing her to eat.  If she's really not impressed, we stop.  I am still breast feeding after meals and know she's getting enough to eat by her weight and energy.

Good luck!

Yes I've noticed that one day he will eat from the spoon and the next I have to battle with him and give finger foods. He's cut his first tooth today so thinks he is a big man and can eat like a grown up! Nice to know I'm not alone!

My son did the same thing. I made all his baby food and he really enjoyed eating until about a month ago, I was lucky if I got 5 spoonfuls in - he would clamp his mouth shut and turn his head. I finally gave up and jut started giving him tiny pieces of table food. Now he eats just about anything we do, he loves pancakes with fruit mixed in, cheerios, jumbo rice krispies, chopped up fruit, veggie burgers, etc. I just make sure everything I give his is either overcooked so its mushy or cut small enough so he can't choke. He is totally into eating again. Good luck!

I think it must be a thing they all go through at this age by what I've read. Doesn't make it less stressful though! Glad it's just just my son though and I wasn't doing something wrong.

I wish I could help, but I am experiencing the same thing w/my son. He use to really love eating solids but now he turns his head after a few bites and is fussy until i give up. He also doesn't like the thicker food that i spoon feed him but can eat other solid finger foods just fine. He prefers the thin pureed foods but will only eats a few bites and then protests!! I don't know what it is and the only thing the Dr says is he will eat when he's hungry.  This has been going on for almost a month now. He does have teeth, 2 on top and 2 on the bottom so I'm not so sure that has much to do with it??
