I am going through the worst post pardom hair loss I have ever experienced, my daughter is 4 months old and everyday I pull out a huge wad of hair in the shower, when can I expect this to end? Will I be bald by the time its over?

it;s true, with my first daughter after my hair stopped falling out I suddenly grew a tuff of hair, it was so funny. My sister told me "wow your hair is really thinning" I hope it stops falling out soon :(((

Hi Melanie, I too am still having this problem, and my baby is nearly 5 months old. I asked the hair dressers and m/w and they both said it can sometimes take upto a year, but our hair will start to grow again!! xx

I'll say ditto here! My son is 5 1/2 months old and I just recently stopped the serious shedding. I have a four year old daughter and my hair loss wasn't anywhere near what it is now. I have read though that your hair gets thicker when you're pregnant, so the thinning might just be natural.

I have the same problem. I would lose large amounts all day. I started taking my vitamins again and that started to help with it. Also went and got my hair cut and that seemed to also help on top of the vitamin.

I recently started using SunSilk "Anti-Fall" shampoo/conditioner, and it seems like it's helping, but then again, it could be coincidence, since I'm at the 5 month mark, and some women on here have said their hair loss has started tapering off around that time...

So glad to know this is common. I also thought it was because I was slacking off on my pre-natal vitamins (still nursing). I don't remember this with my first. Thanks for helping me feel better about this!

I had the same thing happen at four months, I was so scared I was going to have bald spots! My daughter is now 5 months and 1 week and it has started to taper off, I also started using a volumizing mouse which seemed to help :)

thank you so much for posting this! I thought I was going crazy! I mean clumps of hair coming out constantly! I thought maybe it was because I was still nursing and stopped taking my pnvs (although I should be taking them!) because she is taking my nutrients but maybe it's just normal! phew!

Glad I'm not the only one. Just a caution to everyone that babies can get "hair tourniquets" where the hair can get wrapped around one of their body parts like a toe or finger and can cut off the circulation. I always check my baby since my hair is all over the place. If it happens don't try to get it off yourself take them to the Dr immediately.

I've had it with all 3 of my kiddos! What sucks is when it finally stops falling ot, it grows back thicker! My hairloss was actually welcomed because my hair is so thick! It'll come back! Dont' worry!

I forgot to say that I started keeping a hair pick in the shower so that I can get most of what is going to fall out that day out instead of all over my couch, clothes, baby, car . . everywhere! It helps a little.

my hair started to fall out like crazy after my son turned 3 months. he will be 5 months old tomorrow and it has slowed down some, but it is still falling out like crazy. i was wondering when the normal post-pregnancy hair loss ends and something more serious begins.... maybe i will have to try one of those thickening shampoos. does that really help to stop it?

I know everyone is not the same...but here's my story. I never had the positive effect of gaining thicker hair while I was pregnant. Instead I was stuck with my blah, already thin head of hair. Then, when my son was around 2-3 months, it started to fall out. Brushing my hair always left me standing there pulling a mass of hair from my comb. This of course after having lost some in the shower and some to my pillow. Who knew so much hair could cling to a pillow case! Good news, my son just turned 5-months and the hair loss is really slowing down!!!!! It is almost back to normal, but with my hair being so thin to begin with, I really notice the difference. Although I am pretty sure most other people wouldn't.

Had baby number six- five months ago- yes I think I'm going bald every time! I find hair everywhere and lots of it. I've heard its hormonal, from epidural, no longer taking prenatal vitamins, and because during pregnancy you don't loose the daily amount of hair. 100 strands a day is what the average head looses- not pregnant. Anyway it started at about 3 months post pardum and is still coming out. It will get better.

Mine turned out to be a thyroid issue (after the birth of my son July of last year). I have a 4 month old now too - and have been on Synthroid and haven't had any issues yet. Maybe something to check into. ?? I heard it's pretty common to have thyroid problems after a baby.

The hair follicles are all turned "on" while pregnant, so the loss you're experiencing is just 10 months' worth of hair loss all at once. It will slow down, usually around 6-9 months postpartum, but if it is of great concern or you are experiencing other symptoms (fatigue, dry skin, extreme temperatures) then you may wish to have a thyroid and blood count checked.

I have experienced the hair loss with each of my 5 kiddos. The only thing that helped was to be extra careful when brushing and washing my hair. Otherwise, it just came out all the more :(. Don't worry, it won't all fall out, it just seems that way.

LOL I totally hear ya!!! I feel like I'm losing SO much hair! From what I've heard though, it's normal. You don't lose any hair while you're pregnant, so that's a lot of extra hair on your head. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I went with this after the birth of my two other children as well but not to this extent, this has to be the most hair I've ever lost all at once. I took somebodys advice and bought a thickening shampoo today....hope it helps.

You are not alone. I remember going through the hair loss with my oldest and was absolutely mortified. I am now going through it again with my little guy and the olny advice I can give you is the hang in there. I've heard that sometimes it can last up to 6 months, but it eventually ends and no, you won't go bald :) It's even possible that your hair will become thicker.

I am experiencing the same thing! It is so depressing. I thought that it coinciding with discontinuing my prenatal vitamins, but I am learning that a lot of women go through it. I hope it will stop soon or at this rate I will be bald.

Highlights

I had my baby three months ago, and now my hair is starting to fall out. Is this normal?

What can I do about it?

I had my baby three months ago, and now my hair is starting to fall out. Is this normal?

Many new moms are surprised to find themselves shedding more hair than usual in the first few months after giving birth, but it's perfectly normal. And there's no need to panic: You won't go bald. In fact, your hair should be back to normal by your baby's first birthday.

Here's what's going on. Normally, about 85 to 95 percent of the hair on your head is growing and the other 5 to 15 percent is in a resting stage. After the resting period, this hair falls out — often while you're brushing or shampooing it — and is replaced by new growth. An average woman sheds about 100 hairs a day.

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the growing stage. There are fewer hairs in the resting stage and fewer falling out each day, so you have thicker, more luxuriant tresses.

After you give birth, your estrogen levels take a tumble and a lot more hair follicles enter the resting stage. Soon you'll have more hair coming out in the shower or on the brush. This unusual shedding will taper off and your hair will be back to its pre-pregnancy thickness about six to 12 months after you give birth.

By the way, not all women notice dramatic changes in their hair during pregnancy or the postpartum period. Among those who do, it tends to be more obvious among women with longer hair.

What can I do about it?

You won't be able to stop the hair from falling out, but you can experiment with different hairstyles or products (such as hair thickeners or mousse) to give your hair a fuller look during this transition period.

Many moms, tired of scooping hair out of shower drains or sweeping strands off the bathroom floor, find that now is a good time to go for a short cut. Plus, a short, wash-and-go hairstyle can be easier to take care of when you have a new baby in the house and you're strapped for time.

A note to new moms with long hair: Strands of hair can end up tightly wrapped around your baby's tiny appendages, including his fingers, toes, wrists, ankles, and penis. This is called a hair tourniquet, and it can be quite painful for your little one. If you find him crying for no apparent reason, check carefully for tight bands of hair.

Once my daughter turned 3 months old, my hair was falling out everywhere! But as soon as I went to my hairdresser, she trimmed my hair & recommended that I use a new shampoo...Thick Infusion Thickening Shampoo. I am also using a treatment once a week called Nioxin Intensive Therapy Weightless Reconstructive Masque. Try not to use the kind you buy at the drugstore, they're not good for your hair. I've been using this for 2 months now & I have a lot less hair falling out. My hair is also thicker & healthier...doesn't hurt to try it!

I don't know, but I feel like I'm experiencing the same. It could just be shock value - we didn't really lose any hair while pregnant (the normal amount after brushing hair), so it looks even worse after not experiencing that for 9 months...But I have a friend w/a 7 month old and she says she lost a lot of hair too, but I would never have noticed. Hopefully we won't go bald! Stylish hats...?
