How many words does your toddler say?

My son Alex, calls his daddy and myself "da-da" sometimes "daddyyyy." He says "anana" for banana, but I don't think he knows what it means. He also points at our cat and says "kitten." Sometimes I hear him muttering "mom mom mom mom mom" but when I say, "I'm mom mom!" he points at me and says "DADA!." Grrr, lol!

My 17 month old only says 2 words, but he's a 3rd child, so everyone else talks for him. I am having a evaluation done this week -just to make sure something isn't wrong. He understands everything we say, he just doesn't talk.

Quoting Jennille:

My little boy only says 3 words, bye, ma (no mama), and da (no dada). But he is a great climber and is great at figuring things out. But, he doesn't say much. My other two were very quick to pick up words but he is more quiet and very active.

Trust me, when he does start talking, he will REALLY talk.. He sounds like the observant kind, so he's probably just watching and listening to you and his Dad. He'll probably surprise you at how much he can [clearly] say when he really does start to talk.

Yeah ... you're right! My 6 year old doesn't seem to stop talking!

My list may be a little more detailed than most because I am a speech pathologist LOL

Off the top of my head... My daughter is 17 months and says:
mama, dada, puppy, BoBo (our dog), uh-uh (no), hi, hello, bye-bye, uh-oh, yes, get it, I got it, poop, diaper, milk, more, HoHo (from NiHao KaiLan), Sara (her sitter), butt, eye, tickle-tickle, i love you, boom, feet, baba (bottle- though we ignore that word now that it's gone!), all-right, oh my, ohhhhh, book, mine, hippo, thank you, hot, baby, paper, sit, car noises, and about 6 animal sounds. (about 43 words) and will repeat almost anything we say!

signs: more, poop, potty, drink, eat, all done

knows: body parts (hair, ear, nose, mouth, belly button, tummy, butt, feet, hands), can follow simple commands (bring me the book, find your paci, wipe your face, sit down)

I feel like my child is behind. She says, "Mama, Baba, Hi, Bye-bye, Papa, here. I think that is all. She just points at what she wants, or hits me to get my attention and takes me to where she wants to go. Is she behind?

Thats good, at least yours say Hi & bye, mines dont do that at all but he waves. My sons points and cry to get what he wants too. All kids do things different and when they are ready. Please do not judge your kid by what the other kids are doing. my son did not get his 1st tooth til 7 mo, but started teasing at 3 mo. you just wait when your child start talking you will be wishing she will close her mouth.

my 17 mo old can say mommy & daddy, he whisper the word cookie, he can say juice and cup. Now he understands everything, he knows his body parts, he can follow simple commands, like go get a pamper, go get your shoes, or where is your cup. But not doing much talking, and i too have your baby can read.

As far as my son goes, he says "mommy", "daddy, "doggie, "kitty", "Boo Boo" (the cat's nickname), "poopie", "pee pee", "boogie", "hi", "bye", "what's that", "puff" (if he wants his Gerber puffs), "Bobby", "baby", "nana", "stop", "no", "yes".. I think that's about it.

If you're worried then maybe make her start trying to say what she wants instead of her pointing or dragging you to where she wants to be. For instance, if she starts pointing at what she wants, just tell her that she needs to tell you what she wants, otherwise you won't know what to give her.. And don't give her what she wants until she at least tries to make the sound of what she wants.. That might help. It helped a little with my son.

My daughter says.."ball, baby, mama, dada, kitty, hi, hey, bye-bye, backpack, flower, pretty, duck, doggy, peek boo, apple, eye, belly, belly butt (for belly button lol), and shower". I think she understands a lot more than that because when we're talking about something she almost always looks at what we're talking about. She doesn't follow any instructions we ask of her she just looks at us like we're crazy and starts babbling lol.

MY son sounds about the same as yours ... and his name is Alexei :-) He says Mummy, Daddy and Bubby but not really in context. We think he might be starting to say Shoes as well, but most of what he says is just jibberish. He definitely understands what we are saying though, so much so that we have started spelling some words so he doesn't know what we're saying. He's very good at following instructions too. Some kids get a really good grasp on comprehending language, but just take longer to actually use it themselves.

Ha ha we had to start spelling some words too, like cookie and outside, he LOVES to go outside and its getting to cold for him to be out in the evenings. SO we spell it..... at least till he hears the security system beep that the door was opened!

(My daughter is 17 months) I asked my daughters doctor, how many words they should say by 18 months and she said 5 to 6, but my daughter says 70 to 80 words, sometimes she says 3 word sent., she knows all of her body parts, and some other things but all kids are different. Just keep trying and they will pick up words, we also bought your baby can read and that really helped with our daughters words!

We were just trying to think of all the words our daughter knows this morning because every day it's 2 or 3 more. I can't believe how fast they pick up on things! From what I can remember right now she can say, what's that, who's that, baby, puppy, kitty, duck, grandma, papa, mommy, daddy, ball, shoe, cookie, cheese, please, up, down, yellow, blue, hippo, oh no (she says this ALL the time), car, book, sheep, horsey, quack quack, moo, where'd go, bye, hello, yes, flower, turtle, boat, me, nice, ready, go, Ryley, wiggle, jump, running, no, scooby doo, hockey.....I dont think she knows what she is talking about when she says colors though.

My daughter says about 30 words but she doesn't always associate the correct word with the right thing. The words she definetely knows are "Dada", "binkie", "baby", "banana", "papa", "mama", "bottle", "uh-oh", "sippy", "kitty", "dog", "up", "pop", "car", "bye", "hi", "duck", "bear", and "ball".
Sometimes my daughter says "dada" to me also but most times she's very accurate. Hope this helps! Remember, "dada" is much easier for them to say than "mama". In fact, my daughter doesn't know any other "M" words other then "mommy".

my little girl can say 'mamma, dadda, ball, down, there and about 10 animal sounds...thats about it. I'm not too worried. She is a very smart cookie and understands everything we say. She has been a late developer with most things (crawled at 11 months, first tooth at 13 months and walked at 17 months) so i'm assuming her talking might come a little later. My paediatrician isn't worried..as long as they are babbling, the words will eventually come...sooner than we may think.
