I was considering on giving my son some fish for his birthday. Nothing expensive but maybe a few goldfish or something. I know he won't be able to "take care" of the fish but I can give him small tasks like feeding it and stuff. He absolutly loves watching them anytime we are at the store. Any suggestions or comments?

If it is something your child loves to watch....go ahead and get it for him. Animals...any animals...are good for a child. You can teach him how to care for the fish and tell him that you do not give them too much food, otherwise they will die. You can never start too early with teaching children resposibilty

My husband and I just bought our daughter (19 months) an aquarium and fish this past weekend for Valentine's Day. We got her a 10 gallon tank with an algae eater and 2 types of goldfish (not the little orange ones). We plan on adding more later. Even though she can't take care of the tank, we let her feed the fish with our supervision. I think it teaches them responsibility. I think you have a great idea!

my little boy got a goldfish in a simple tank from his grandparents for his 2nd birthday in June 2007, Frisbee is still alive and happy. Its usually me who takes the responsibility for cleaning the tankbut a fish is a nice 1st pet xx

We got my daughter a Betta fish just before she turned 2 when she went into her "big girl" bed. Almost 2 years later and the thing is still alive and kicking. We ended up with the Betta because we were told that goldfish are more maintenance (we just have a small fish bowl with no filter or anything). She helps me clean the rocks in the sink and loves it. I also plan to get my younger daughter one when she goes into her "big girl" bed by summertime, she'll be 2 in June.

I think fish are great! My brother and sister in law bought my daughter a small 5 gallon gold fish tank when she was about 16 months old. She started out with 2 fish, but one died a few weeks in. The other is still alive. I let her feed her fish and she gets so excited. Obviously they can't take care of the fish completely or clean the tank, but I think having the fish starts to teach them about pets. It's a lot of fun!

we got my oldest son fish for his room as a night light. He was around 2 at the time. It was really calming and he loved them. He loved to feed them and he dumped a whole bottle of fish food in the tank and killed them :(
I would recommend a small 1 gallon tank to start. It is a wonderful thing!
