I started my 6 month old daughter on solids about 3 weeks ago and since then she has been constipated and doesnt poop for days. She is seriously grumpy all the time and doesnt sleep well through the night anymore. I am still breastfeeding her also. She is pretty gassy too. I temporarily stopped the babyfood until I can figure out a solution so her tummy can process the food better. She now is pooping regularly and sleeping better. Has anyone else had this problem?

I had the same problem. We switched to oatmeal, from rice cereal. Prunes, peaches and pears seem to help. We also give her water mixed with a little apple juice in a sippy cup. Her poop has gone from being solid/firm to soft (it looks like an orange wedge!). You can try 1-2 tsp of dark corn syrup in a bottle (this worked once...she wouldn't take any more). Your LO's belly should eventually adjust. I've come to the resolution that solid foods = solid poops!!! Ask your pediatrician for recommendations. Our Dr also told us we could try 1/4 capfull of Miralax (not a laxative, but goes right through them and takes everything with it). My best advice...talk to your DR!!!!!

yeah, I have the same problem right now, 2 and a half days and nothing yet, I have tried apple, prune juice, infants friend and apple and pear juice mixed with water and nothing yet. My daughter also wakes up more of a night when constipated. I guess it is just an adjustment period, hoping her body gets used to it soon!  just thought I'd say thanks to all for your suggestions, it's nice to know we are not alone :)

my 7 month old is constipated right now too. When it happened the first time we gave him prunes for a few days and it seems to work a bit. But now it is happening again. He only has pellet like BMs. We are giving him pears and oatmeal which I thougth would help, but still nothing. Any suggestions?

Yes!
I called a public health nurse in my area and she suggested giving red meat and rice cereal, and wait on the fruits and Veg. She also said to start slow. don't introduce too many foods at once (which you probably all ready know)
I don't know if it's the meat or the cereal, but she is doing much better...

What are you feeding her? Cereals can be very constipating... I recommend fruits like apples and pears for a few days. You can also try a tiny bit of prune puree. That will get things going!

hi, i had the same problem when my daughter was on solids and was breastfeeding her. It happens when the food they eat has changed, all i did was gave her some grip water or prunes (just a little bit) to help and it helped. i only gave it to her every three or four days, it will take a little while for their body to get used to the change.

Oh ya....I have the same problem. My son was constipated, irritable and gassy. I also took a break from food for a bit and my son is now eating again. But I am not giving him rice or oatmeal cereal with iron in it. I have made my own Brown Rice cereal and he has not been constipated since.

Check out this site, it's great. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/

I've also been giving him water in a sippy cup during meals and thoughout the day. He likes it :-)

Yes my twins have had this same problem - my son has had a harder time with it than my daughter. When I talked to the 'after hours nurse' she said that it was fine for them not to go for a long time. I also looked up on Web MD constipation in infants - it said that babies are only constipated if it's hard when they go - even if it's once a week - as long as it's not hard then they really aren't constipated.

It still bothered me and this last time it had been 4 days. The Dr. said that I could give him juice 1-2 ounces a day. If that didn't work I could put dark Karo syrup (they specified dark) a tablespoon in his bottle. I gave him pear juice the prune juice (not watered down). That seems to work. After he went I started adding pears to his cereal. I don't know if this is good or bad b/c it's sweet and the books that I have read said that giving sweet to your child early may cause them to prefer sweet things so I don't know if I would recommend this or not - but it has been working for us and he loves it. So I give him pears with the cereal and he's been going much more often since then.
