"Reading" books that are upside down - not turning the book the right way

My son is 20 months old now and loves "reading" books and looking at the pictures. What bothers me is that he hardly ever has the book the right way up. He keeps the pictures upside down and is not bothered to turn it around.....will this become a problem later on?

It doesn't matter, they are not interested in the words when looking by themselves, they enjoy the colors and pictures... even if they are upside down. :-) I have four and all of them did the same thing. My oldest is a fluent reader, my 4 yr old has been reading on his own for the most part sense he turned 3, and my toddler has just now become interested in "reading" upsidedown, sideways, right side up... it don't matter he just enjoys the book itself.

I forgot my son who's 21mo did the same thing when we started reading books. But now that he's heard the stories and the pictures explained to him a few hundred times, the right side up, he looks at the book the right way. I think he's just interested in the book, keeping reading and I bet you won't even notice when he stops doing that too.

No they are still learning from the books that they are looking at and its really mainlly the colours that they are intressted in that what attracts them to it in the firts place sooner or later they will get it right try sitting down with him reading showing him all the different pictures ect he will slowly get a better understanding. good luck

I wonder Liesel cause my little boy does the same thing as well! Probably not though (or at least I hope not). They should later develop enough logic to realise they are looking at the books the wrong way.

That is very lovely of a 20 month old who has interest in books alreay. Dont worry this wll not pose a problem. At this age he can only see the colors and not really pictures. As time goes on he will be noticing the pictures itself and will then move to the stage where he can notice when the book is upside down

my son is 21 months old and for the last 2 months or so he has been turning the book the right way, he even grabbed a boardgame off the table and turned it so it was facing him properly, so not sure, i think like with everything else children develop differently in all areas.

My son of the same age does the same thing when he "reads" a book by himself. However, when I am reading to him and I ask him to point to different objects, he can do it, so clearly he understands what he is looking at. I think to toddlers all objects are multi purpose and they enjoy holding, chewing, and exploring books at all angles as much as they like "reading" I wouldnt worry, enough mums on here have said their children do the same - I am sure they will work it all out soon!

I think that later on they will grow out of it . Right now it is not that important that they have it he right way. Besides they are still learning, it might just look funny that way and he likes to see the pictures upside down..If you are really woried about it though ask your doctor if there is anything to try.or if that you should really worry about it right now.
