My 21 month old loves to read books, However she only loves to do it herself. When we try to read the story to her, she wants nothing to do with it. It makes me sad because I really want to read the stories to her. Any Thoughts?

I think your worrying too much about this. At this age all children want to do is look at pictures and sometimes we cant read quick enough before they want to turn the page to see the next picture. My son loves his books too and i just make the story up as i go along as to what is in the picture or i get him to point things out to me from the picture. For example wheres the tree? Wheres the dog? etc. This way we are spending time together but it is at his stage of wanting to read and not my own. The time will come when she comes to you and asks you to read to her but at the moment she is too young for this.

We have a Parents as Teachers worker that cmes to our house to give us info about anything and everything we may need. Her solution is (and it seems to work) even if they don't sit down for you to read to them, read to them anyway. My son has picked up on the new word just by us doing this. Whatever he is playing with I'll try to find a book to match. It worked for us. If you want more info you can go to: www.parentsasteachers.org

My son does the same he'll take the book and read to himself and look at the pictures but when we want to read the story to him he doesn't want that either. I think one should leave them and let them explore books by themselves and once their ready and their bigger one can try again to read to them.
