My 21 month old son was just diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder. He has issues with talking ( only about 6 words), eating ( texture issues!), bright light ( sunlight makes him melt down! thank goodness we are in Seattle LOL!), loud noises ( will send him into blood curdeling screams the same decimil as a smoke alarm). we are getting into Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy. what do/does anyone know about this disorder??? thanks!

My son has a lot of sensory issues but we know that he is autistic. He is a lot like how you are describing your son. He says very little although he is finally beginning to say more. He only eats baby food bananas and gags on anything else. He picks at his face, spins in cirlcles, walks on tiptoes, and HATES anything on his hands!! He has been in speech therapy, occupational theraphy (OT) and play therapy for about 6 months now and it is getting a little better. He still gags a lot on new foods (taste and texture) and we are working on him touching new things and he is signing and using some words. It is a lot of work but it will make you so proud when you start seeing it work!! Be patient...it is not going to happen overnight. It is hard work but it will pay off.

You can find quite a bit of information if you google it. But Carol Stock Kranowitz is an excellent resource. She wrote the books "The out of sync child" and "The out of sync child has fun" These are great books and have several ideas for things you can do at home to help him. PT and OT will help and they can give you some ides of things to do as well.
