I want to make a cake for my sons first birthday but we dont want him to have a traditional cake packed with sugar as we want to try and keep him from sweets for as long as possible at least till 4 or 5

any suggestions on a cake or something ?

thanks....

Hey let him have sugar. There’s nothing wrong in kids having sugar unless they take too much of eat. Instead of making him stay away from sugar, let him try everything but teach him to choose the healthier options.

Angel food cake n home made whipped cream icing. But I plan on makeing my son Choc. cupcakes n white icing were going sports so hes gonna have soccer balls all over them. LOL Its the first birthday unless your child is diabetic its a natuaral right I think to get that first sugar rush n make a huge mess in the process. My daughter had one of the mini cakes all to her self n she loved it! I cant wait to see my lil one tear into it n have to clean icing out of his ears n hair! Gonna be awsome!!

After reading these comments, I'm not so sure lol but my plan has been to make my own sponge cake, whipped cream in the middle with some strawberry jam and some small icing decortations on top. Not overly sweet so she can at least have some :o)

Instead of using traditional icing, and what we are doing, is making some whipped cream icing instead. Just buy a small carton of whipping cream and whip it up yourself. As for the cake, you could always make a batch of muffins and put some icing on it. I on the otherhand will be letting my son have some cake. Its his 1st b day and why not.

Im in the same boat as you, but its his birthday so we don't see a problem with him having cake one day a year. Just not so much icing. But real sugar is SOOOOO much better then artifical. Sweetener is absolutely horrible for them and you, thats one thing I am going to make sure my son stays far away from altogether.

there is a recipe in the back of the book "What to Expect the First Year" that calls for apple juice instead of sugar. Maybe you could try something like that.

just give him the cake! we did this with my first one, what you are doing, tried to hold out on anything sweet, sugary, chocolate, etc, and now that he is 8, he goes crazy around it!! He will eat a ton if I would let him, with my next 2 we were much more relaxed about it and they could care less, they dont even ask for desserts or popsicles, etc. so now I feel like we turned it into a big deal with our oldest. we now have a 4th who will be one next month and we are treating him like the last 2 instead of our oldest! all in moderation and I would think that natural sugar would be better for him than anything you would have to put in a cake to artificially sweeten it. Just my 2 cents and we are now living with it!!

u can make a cake with an artificial sweetener like the ones diabetics use in coffee.
