My son Easton will be 6 months old on the 25th, and he hates eating cereal!! We tried introducing it to him at 4 months and he will only eat a couple of bites. We have tried giving it to him several different ways, but all with no luck!! We've tried warming it, making it thicker, mixing it with formula, mixing it with water. We've tried rice cereal, and oatmeal cereal. We've tried different spoons, and in different places like his high chair or bouncy seat. I don't know if it's the texture he doesn't like or what!? I recently tried giving him baby food and he loves it! So, I thought I would trick him and mix some baby food with his cereal, but he was not having that! Is anyone else having this same problem? Is it ok to skip cereal and go to baby food?

My son will be 6months on the 30th... He doesn't like cereal as well.... I try feeding him twice in a day, morning and night because I know he his appetite has greatly increased and he'll suck me dry otherwise... He won't take more than 50ml of formula even if I try. I feed him the cereals nonetheless, I know he hates it too much, and I wait for him to cry cos thatz the only time he swallows the meal... I know itz brutal but I love my son so much and I won't want him hungry... Babies cry all the time, don't they? So, itz not too much of a big deal if he cries while he's feeding....

My son would eat cereal, but then ended up throwing up all night when I gave it to him, so I skipped it and went to baby food. My doctor said it was okay because I'm still breastfeeding, so he's getting the calories he needs from the milk. I recently started mixing baby oatmeal with his applesauce, and he seems to really like it, and he's able to keep it down.

With the whole starting them on veggies first, is a bunch of crap! I actually started my daughter out on fruits and she still eats all the veggies. All kids are different. My doctor also said that you can start giving your baby juice between 4-6 months, but it needs to be watered down. I started giving my daughter juice at 5 1/2 months and giving her cereal with juice and she is doing just fine. And she still eats her veggies!

My son didn't like it at first either. It took us a month of a few spoonfulls at a time and most of it ended up on him and not in his tummy. but one day he finally learned how to swallow and he does great ever since. But if he just wont eat it then go to veggies! It wont hurt him, just make sure you do small amounts followed with a bottle or breast. At six months you can introduce 1st foods anyways, so you're good. (dont do fruit first he might not ever want veggies after that). good luck

I tried giving my daughter rice cereal at 5 months and she hated it, but I believe she was just not ready to eat solids yet, so I took a break and didn't offer it to her. Now that she's 6 months, she loves it and I often mix it with either breastmilk or a little veggies. I tried it with juice and it's WAY too sweet.

The Pediatrician said to offer all veggies before giving them fruit and to avoid giving them juice -- otherwise they won't want more bland things. My daughter seems to do great.

I tried the rice cereal with just breastmilk (gross sounding, I know, but it tastes pleasant enough).

I tried starting my daughter on cereal at 4 months old, and she didn't like it. I finally got her to eat it after I mixed juice in it. Also instead of just giving my daughter the rice cereal I am giving her the rice with mixed fruit, and am still making it with juice and she loves it!

Hi Beth-
my 6 month old loves his cereal, but my daughter (now 3) hated it. We tried everything you did trying to trick her but she wasn't going for it. We skipped it and went right to baby food. One thing my doctor said though was to make sure you start them with veggies first or you might not get her to eat them after she has the sweet fruit taste. Good luck!

Same results with my 6 month old son! We've only tried rice cereal so far mixed with breastmilk. I thought he was just frustrated cus nursing is a much quicker way to eat the same taste :p but I tried him on baby meat and same reaction. he doesn't cry, doesn't make a face, he just.. won't open his mouth. just watches me, watches the spoon, doesn't seem to want to eat. so I quit for the week, worried he's telling me he's not ready yet.
I'll try with oat cereal on monday and then try mixing with water, all the different ways times etc. When i took him for his shots the health nurse was reminding me how important it is for him to get something with iron in it now that he's 6 months. Baby cereal is iron fortified, there's also baby meat which the World Health Organization is now recommending because of the iron content for a first food, if your baby is formula fed, it's fortified already so you don't have to worry so much about that. But then I've heard stories from other bfeeding moms who xclusively fed till 8 months or so and their babes were just fine so I don't know. I'm more worried about pushing my son too fast if he's not ready and putting him at risk for allergies.
but I'll keep trying with the cereal, and meat, if after another week or so he's still not interested I'll to find a fruit or veggie and if he likes it then mix that with the cereal/meat.

My daughter had rice cereal for a week, wasnt too keen on it, gave her oatmeal for the next week, she ate a little more, gave her carrots, she opened her mouth and looked for more! She was 6mths on the 10th, I would say go ahead and try some veggies, start of with carrots or something, stay away from the fruits for a while or he could develop a sweet tooth and decide he doesnt like veg! Also, she only takes a tablespoon of food (followed by bottle) so dont be discouraged if he wont eat alot of it, it can take a while for them to get used it, as Natalie said, be patient, it will happen :) Good Luck!

Hi. I started my daughter Emily on cereal about 3 weeks ago. She was about 5 months old. She was really ready for something extra. She really didn't like the cereal. She would spit it out and screw her face up. My 6 year old son tryed some, and he said it tasted awful. So i started her on baby food. First apple, then after a week i tried apple and mango. She absolutely loves it. I think i could be giving her too much though. She never wants to stop once she starts eating it. She hates waiting for the next spoonful.

So i suggest that you try some basic baby food, and be patient, it will happen.

hey Beth, my Daughter Grace is 5 months and we tried giving her cereal at 4 months with the same result. I've since tried giving her cereal, the same as you, different stages, different ways with also the same result. So i gave up and just started giving her mushy fruit/baby food etc, and she loves it!! cant get enough of it. so i've decided she simply doesnt like the taste of cereal and im not gonna force her to eat it. but id be interested to see what response you receive as to whether its ok to skip the cereal all together also!!
