my son is 5 months old and he just started sitting on his own for like 10 seconds, my pediatrician said too lay him on his back holds his hands and pull him up to a sitting position it will help strengthen his tummy and leg muscles to support sitting, after awhile he started pulling himself up when i held his hands.

Quoting Brandy:
They usually can't sit completley on their own until about 5 or 6 months. But they should start trying to around 4 months. Oh and my daughter doesn't really like the bumbo seat. She'll only sit in it for a couple minutes then she's gets frustrated.
they make a tray for the bumbo that my son loves! you can have toys on there that they play with and it makes sitting there more entertaining for them. =)

My first was 6 months when she started sitting without support. Katelyn is 4 1/2 months and still has to have support while sitting. We've been practicing with her by sitting her on the floor with the boppy pillow behind her (so she doesn't fall over). We also have a bumbo seat that she likes to sit in.
