Does skipping crawling mess with development?

My son is 9 months old and he keeps pulling up and trying to take steps with us holding him but he will not even try to crawl! Is that okay? Will walking without ever crawling mess with his development mentally, physically, or anything?

Thanks everyone for your help. Yeah he would rather spend his time pulling up and trying to walk holding onto Mommy than have tummy time. I put him in the floor with his toys a little bit away from him to see if he will try to get them but he only goes after them every once in a while. Maybe he will just start walking instead. Thanks again everyone!

no, skipping crawling will not interfere with your son's development. Some children do not crawl. My son would rather pull up and try to walk than to crawl.

Whether or not a child crawls has little to do with their gross and fine motor skills. Previous research had suggested that by not crawling a child will not develop a good range of fine and gross motor skills. However recent research has dis proven this theory. On saying that, how much time a child spends on the floor (crawling or not) will affect their spacial awareness. A child who spends a fair amount of time in Exersaucers, Jolly Jumpers, Walkers and activity centres will have less tiem to develop their spacial awareness than those who spend most of their time on the floor (TT etc). This is due to the fact that in Exersaucers, Jolly Jumpers, Walkers and activity centres children are limited in their exploration. They cannot learn that if they fall it hurts, how to reach for things, roll and move about on their own. My suggestion is to offer as much floor time as possible ( my Daughter has NONE of the things mentioned above, and spends almost all of her time on the floor playing independently or with me). While he may never crawl (some babies just don't) at least he will be able to develop a good sense of spacial awareness.
