I haven't tried the rusks yet, I'm so paranoid of chocking. My son has been on solids for a couple months too. Right now I'm doing a lot of food in the gerber net/mesh feeder things because he is determined to self-feed.

Rusks are good because they dissolve and don't break easily so they rally can't choke (mu daughter has had them since 4 months and never ever had an issue. I also give her cruskits which are good because before she can actually bite them they too dissolve. She sometimes has milk arrowroots, but I have to be extra careful as they get bitten off very easily. I too was very concerned about choking but as long as you supervise when they are having these foods they should be fine. And if they do bite of a chunk, fish it out with your finger.
