Ok... So my son is 14 months old and he's absolutely perfect!!! ( i know, i am biased!) and i graduated from college in 2007 with a Political Science degree and have since had a couple jobs... NOTHING to do w/ my degree. Im trying to get back into school to pursue a nursing degree but all these schools are giving me such a hard time. Unfortunately, I cant afford to quit my job and do school full time so Im looking for evening programs, and despite the fact that I know it will take a little longer doing it that way... Im OK w/ that as long as it gets me to a better career place...ya know?

AND my job is perfect for going to school at the same time... i work as a receptionist in an office building but have A LOT of free time on my hands to do school work, which is greaaat, but its SOOOOOO boring. I just feel so frustrated b/c I have a degree, Im a smart hard working young lady and Im at a standstill and I hate it =( I feel like such a complete failure, career wise. I need some words of wisdom!

I hear your pain, every little thing even ones that should be simple just take forever to sort out. My challenge lately has been to tackle a small part of each big task one at a time rather than trying to do it all at once and getting overwhelmed.

Oh check out your local unemployment office or workforce development center, they have classes and often you can just get face to face with someone that can help with things. Classes my center offers are Career Exploration, Creative Job Search, and Creating a Professional Portfolio.

Thanks Ladies!!! It's good to know Im not alone in this... I am just so irritated with myself that I didnt continue my schooling right away... maybe I'd be closer to where I want if I had... but I guess theres no sense in wondering the "what if's" really. I just wish these schools would just help me more.. every time I talk to someone I get different pieces of info that dont mesh... which is just ridiculous!!

You sound like you are already on the right path, using your frustration to fuel going back to school. You are SO not alone, in the last 2 years I have only worked 6 months and it has NOT been by my choice! I am currently deciding on some online classes to take to keep my skills current and get some specialization in a couple of areas that are in higher demand for my field.

If your receptionist job covers the bills and gives you free time to study then count yourself lucky!

My word of wisdom is Grants Grants Grants, apply for lots and lots of grants, any you can find.

I think it's just amazing that you HAVE a degree!! ODn't ever say your a failure, In any way. You did'nt fail getting the degree did you? It's not your fault that there are no options for you at the moment. Just remember everything happens for a reason and one day you will look back and say " those time in my life only made me stronger" = ) Good luck!

dont feel bad. you arent alone. i have a degree in history, and i couldnt find a job either. i graduated in 2001, and ended up at taco bell. i know there are people with phd's who work at mcdonalds and other fast food because they cant get a job.

have you tried maybe a teaching certificate (i know with a poli sci degree, you probably get that question as much as i do with a history degree), or being a substitute teacher (here in Indiana, you get paid $75 a day for subbing, if you have a degree, $50 if you dont).

or maybe online classes for nursing (the classes you can take online, if there are any for nursing, i'm not sure). other than that, i dunno.

i just know how frustrating it can be to have a degree and not be able to use it.
