Hi! My baby just turned 8 months and lately he has been grabbing the spoon and putting his fingers in his mouth when feeding him with the spoon. I am thinking he is ready to try some finger foods but I am so afraid he won't know to chew and will choke or something. What should I let him try as is first ever finger food?? Any suggestions??? Thanks!!!

Try Mum Mums. They are like the puffs, they melt as he eats them, but they are a large cracker like thing. So less able to choke on them. Walmart or Babies r us sells them.

Thanks so much for your replies!! I ended up getting him some puffs tonight and we tried giving it to him. He loved them! He was doing so well eating them and then all the sudden he choked on one- but he worked it out and he was asking for more. I just have to get over this fear of choking by keep practicing and it will get easier. I think the puffs were a great suggestion to start (for me). Thanks again!!!

I started my infant on finger foods when she turned 7 months old, we never did the purees since she didn't like it. At 7 months old my infant started eating pretty much everything we ate (minus the salt).

If you're concerned about choking try the Gerber Puffs and see how he takes it. Those melt in his mouth but you can see if he tries to make the 'chewing' motion. I mus warn you that if he's never had these or any other finger foods he's going to do a 'gagging' sound. Watch him closely and try again. If you see that he's not ready then continue with purees or a little more chunkier foods (chunky enough to swallow)

From experience, I started the following foods as her first finger foods.

Puffs

steamed cut up veggies (carrots, green beans, peas, acorn and butternut squash) and

steamed cut up fruit (apples) and cut up pears, banana and any other soft fruit

Cheese

Pasta

Beans

Egg yolk

Saltine Crackers (w/o salt)

Toast with mashed up food spread

Here's a great website I use. It's a great tool, I use it often. You can find many first finger foods for your LO.

French Fries :) That was the first finger food i gave my 8mo son. He loved it. Was able to hold onto it, feed himself it and was mushy enough that i was not worried in the littlest. Not to mention that the salty taste was like a drug to him. Also, there are these things called "Mum Mums" You can get them at walmart or babies r us. They r a cracker like thing that dissolves very quickly with them sucking on it. Good thing to try to get him use to feeding himself. Good luck.

Anything, babies have the best gag reflex, if they swallow something they shouldn't they are really good at bringing it back up. They also use their gums to mush everything up so anything you want to try you can give him really. My daughter will be 8 months on friday and has been having finger food, as well as what we eat for dinner and lunch for the last 1.5 months. If you would like me to put a list together of everything i feed her i can :) good luck
