I try to make my baby's veggies homemade but lately he doesn't seem to like them. He never liked the green beans or peas. He liked the butternut squash, carrots and sweet pot. but this last time I made carrots he wouldn't eat them and gagged. He ate the gerber organic carrots no problem. I tasted them and it doesn't taste like carrots at all to me. They say no refined sugar or salt but I'm wondering what is really in it since it tastes so different. Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure, but carrots are one of the foods that you should buys already made, even organic carrots can have nitrates in the soil that they are grown in and the levels are not tested, but in the canned baby food they are. This is also true for spinach, I just started making my little guys food, but he eats everything given to him so far, wish I could help more..

Concerning the ingredient list, that bothers me too. About 10 years ago, Gerber put fillers in their stage 2 and stage 3 products, but after the CSPI and FDA decided they had an issue with it, supposedly Gerber cut them out of their ingredient lists altogether- but I'm always a skeptic and read the ingredient list for every kind of baby food I buy. I plan on starting to make my own baby food (getting fresh green beans and carrots tomorrow) because I think that some of the baby food tastes a little suspicious too. What bothers me is that they say the sugar contained in the baby food fruit, for instance, is the same sugar "naturally found in fruit." Okay, so does that mean that the only sugar in the baby food is directly from the fruit in the baby food? or is there sugar that originated in fruit but has been added to give the baby food extra sweetness? We really don't know, which is one of the reasons I'm switching to home-made baby food as much as possible.

My son has eaten Gerber's carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, and green beans, and enjoys the peas and carrots the most. He actually gagged a little at first with the carrots, but I remember doing that when I was little. The taste didn't appeal to me, and my natural instinct was to gag. My mom made me eat them anyway, and once I got used to them I stopped. When my son started doing this I gave him even more time between bites, and cut the bites down even smaller. The next time I fed him carrots there was no problem; I think he just had to get used to the slightly different taste and texture as well.

So, I wouldn't worry about a little gagging (as gagging isn't the same as choking), and just use your instinct with what kind of baby foods you buy and which you prepare. If you keep giving him home-made carrots, though, odds are he'll just get used to them and eventually eat them in the same proportion to the other foods you feed him.

Good luck! (and sorry this turned into an epistle ; )
